I'm tryin to create a flier, something small, to post on myspace... anyone have any way of, oh i dont know, telling me how the hell to use photoshop... its making me mad.

i know.. i have my background layer, then on top of that i want to throw an image in a second layer, but everytime i open an image... it converts the image to the background

Just drag and drop the image to where it's above the background layer
