Nation's Top 10 athletic programs
Jesuit at head of the class with all-around success

By Kevin Armstrong, SI.com and Jon Mahoney, Special to SI.com, RISE

Now in his third year as the athletic director at Jesuit (Portland, Ore.) High, Mike Hughes says he has recognized a growing trend in the high school athletics landscape, namely the decline of the three-sport athlete.

"We lament the loss of the three-sport athlete and the idea that kids are better off playing more sports," says Hughes. "We think there is an all-around quality to success when kids play different sports."

That philosophy of overall success is the reason why Jesuit is SI.com's No. 1 program for 2006-07. To come up with our Top 10 with the help of RISE magazine, as well as our top programs in each state, we looked for success on and off the field, state championships and Division I scholarship athletes. Jesuit was at the head of the class, having won five state championships and producing 16 student-athletes who signed with Division I schools.

For the 13th consecutive school year, the Crusaders won the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association's All-Sports Award, which recognizes the school with the most state tournament points across all sports. Of Jesuit's 18 varsity teams, 10 finished first or second in the state tournament and 16 of the 18 were Metro League champs.

"For all of the teams and talent and tradition to come together in a year like this is truly special," said cross-country and track and field coach Tom Rothenberger, who has been at the school for 25 years.

Without further ado, here are the top 10 athletics programs for the 2006-07 school year:

1. Jesuit (Portland, Ore.)

Enrollment: 1,145

'06-'07 state championships: Football, girls' cross-country, boys' swimming, girls' tennis, and men's golf

2. DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.)

Enrollment: 1,005 (all boys)

'06-'07 state championships: DeMatha doesn't compete for state titles

3. Warren Central (Indianapolis)

Enrollment: 4,100

'06-07 state championships: Football, boys' cross-country, girls' track

4. Miami (Fla.) Northwestern

Enrollment: 2,475

'06-07 state Championships: Football, girls' track and field

5. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.)

Enrollment: 1,650

'06-'07 state championship: Girls basketball

6. John Curtis (River Ridge, La.)

8. Southlake (Texas) Carroll

It's no surprise that Carroll once again dominated in football this season. The Dragons defeated Austin Westlake, 43-29, in the Class 5A Division I state championship to earn their third consecutive state title and fourth in five years. It was also the 48th consecutive win for the Dragons, who were led by junior quarterback Riley Dodge and junior running back Tre' Newton, both of whom have committed to Texas. Dodge was named Class 5A state Offensive Player of the Year. Not to be outdone, the girls' cross-country team won its second consecutive Class 5A state title. Sophomore Tara Upshaw finished in third place individually.

9. Collins Hill (Suwanee, Ga.)

Enrollment: 3,750

'06-'07 state championships: Girls' basketball, girls' cross-country, boys' swimming

T-10. BC High (Dorchester, Mass.)

'06-'07 state championships: Boys' basketball, hockey

T-10. Long Beach (Calif.) Poly

Why don't they list Snyder High School, not only the best football program, but the best athletic program in Texas and the United States?

Don't you actually have to make a state championship game sometime in your schools history to be considered the best football program?

We more than meet that requirement, but we have not yet played in a state championship football game. How many titles has Forney won since going to 4A?

the only other in Texas that could be considered nationally is Highland Park

traditionally ALL progroms fare well in post distict and state competition

I would probably give them the nod over SLC in Overall program

both are great programs

the guys at SI dont really know
Im sure there are other great programs in other states

Canyon is an outside shot here

my top 3

1. HP
2. SLC
3. Canyon

OVER ALL PROGRAM

before anyof you nn's fire out

They only pick the well known programs, they aren't going to look at some small school in Texas.

So you are taking those programs over all other programs in the country?

no nn

I said those are the best and probably only programs that could be ranked in a national poll

I feel that HP may be ahead of SLC in Texas

prpbably because HP is 4A and Canyon is 3A they were probably not considered

same with other states

Im sure it took some time to research the poll
but if you threw in ALL schools from all over the country
it would be very time consuming

but without a doubt SLC-HP-Canyon are by far the best
Poth does a great job in AA
Windthorst in class A

again for OVERALL PROGRAM success

some schools just have some success in one or 2 related sports

these are good top to bottom
