I never got what he does, I looked it up but it didn't make any sense.

He's responsible for keeping the church running. If the church were a multi-billion dollar business (some would say it is), he'd be the CEO.

He's also the head of state of Vatican City (think of this role as being the King). The historical significance of this is that at one time, the Papacy controlled a good amount of land on the Italian Peninsula. When Italy reunited under Cavour (with help from Garibaldi), they gained most of the land formerly controlled by the Papal States. But they could not gain Rome. So they made a treaty with the pope that promised recognition of soverignity and some levels of military protection for the Vatican in exchange for control of most of the city of Rome (excluding the Vatican).

I'm Catholic. I loved Pope John Paul II. I don't really care for Benedict XVI. Oh well, I guess we have to put up with him.

and it says the speed limit is 20 mph...a nice jog or ride a bike would be more practical, right

He is a Catholic's supreme advocate/mediator before God. He is God's principal liason with Catholics. He is infallable in matters of the church, so therefore in all matters concerning the worldwide church, the Pope is the final Catholic authority. He has the benefit of the Council of Bishops (in an advisory capacity), but the final decisions/rulings are his and his alone.
