Hello DownLow... Just woke up and stretched after that long nap. Seems like I just went to sleep in the Spring watching the Rangers suck... and woke up and the Rangers still suck.

Nahhhh... Seriously....

The Bear clan is taking the Travel Trailer to Mustang Island at the end of July, 1st of August. We will be camping close to the beach and are looking forward to enjoying the Coastal Life for a few days. I need some help from our knowledgable posters here...

1.) What is the best way to drive from DFW? Most folks I ask say use I35... a few say take 183(?) out of Austin. What is your opinion? (I am hauling my TT and will not be driving 75.)

2.) Any can't misses around the Corpus Area? Any special recomendations?

Thanks all and good to see everyone again!

Dang, that was a loooooong nap. ;)

My suggestion is to avoid I35, but that's just me. :D Sounds like fun!

I usually take IH-35 to 123 to 181

You'll be in the neighborhood - we need to set up a M&G :D

If you take 183 - you'll most likely come through Cuero - let me know if you're heading this way :)

You know... I thought about seeing the DLers there while we were being beach bums... I'll keep everyone posted.

I like the I35, 123, 183 idea.... What is 123 like?

123 is okay some construction in Navarro, but nothing major. it will suck if you get stuck behind a truck since it's a two lane hwy. don't worry too much about the change in speed limits hardly ever any cops on that stretch of road - none that i've seen and i used to travel that road ALOT!

what's wrong with 281 as far south as you choose to go. You can avoid I-35 and still connect with whatever you want to south of San Antonio avoiding all big city traffic.

281 is my drive of choice when I am heading to Austin. I guess it wouldn't hurt to take 281 to 183 since I am driving through Austin anyway.

What is 183 South of Austin like?

Lots of lights. :D Some construction. Luling stinks, but the rest is some nice lonely driving. LOL. I really enjoy driving on 183 and I'm not real sure why.

never really got stuck by the train in Luling, I might have to wait a few seconds but they're usually going 50+ through there...

I drove 183 from Cuero to Austin many a time in my younger years (okay a few years ago), nice little drive... watch the troopers in Gonzales though...

As far as can't-miss stuff to do... well, it's more of can't-miss places to eat:

Since you'll be on Mustang Island SP, here are the three in Port Aransas:
1. Shells Seafood, $13-$20 a plate, also have a lunch menu... very unique type of cuisine
2. Ventian Hot Plate (Italian) $10-$17 a plate
3. Boiling Pot (Cajun) I forget how much, want to say about $10-$15 a person... The waiters just want to get you drunk (and get drunk with you), but it's a great atmosphere and great food.

183 is a fairly good road all the way. Four lanes through most of the towns and a long ways south of Austin. We just travelled it to and from the state baseball tourney. It will take you through some fairly scenic country, hills not all that big, through Lockhart, Luling, Gonzales, Cuero, Goliad, and straight into Refugio on the south end. Then you can take US 77 into Corpus Christi. You'll also pass right by Sinton and through Odem on the way. By all means, you MUST call when you get close. We gotta get together at least one evening.

Your next best (shorter)route would be to take US77 south at Waco and stay on it all the way. Haven't travelled that way in a long time, but it used to be a fairly decent highway.
