View Full Version : Walk-on at UT

I have decided that once im out of the military, Im going to try and walk-on at UT. i dont care if i play scout team and never run onto the field with the team. I want to be a part of that program so badly i can taste it. Ahmard Hall walked-on and earned a starting position his sr year. im not expecting to get that. but looking at Texas depth Chart they have a few guys about my size. I am confident that I can work out a deal with my supervisor to where I can focus on training, because that is what my main focus is right now anyway, but its training others. I wrote coach Brown an email about 2 hours ago (4am Texas time) and asked him what he thought about it. I wasnt really sure how else to go about it. but i do know that he is big in getting to know the players himself as opposed to letting the recruiting coaches do all the work and he meet them on a different level later down the road. some of you may doubt me in this. thats just fine. there is a little something in me that is similar to what VY had. he took all the doubters and used that to motivate him to prove he is the real deal. he does it time and again. i will do the same. HOOK'EM!!

I think that's great. Don't ever let other people decide for you what you can and can't do.

I will never let anyone tell me i cant do something. well let me rephrase that... no one will ever get away with telling me i cant do something. i have heard that my whole life. and just like VY, i have shown them all differently. nothing will keep me from my dream. bottom line.

make sure you can move man.

also, i am sure that you know that you have to be able to move laterally in order to play.

how much longer are you in for?

Just some pointers beforehand (in case you didn't think of it):

1) Get your application processed (I think it's texascommonapps.com)
2) Get your h.s. transcript sent
3) Register with the NCAA clearinghouse

Good luck!

If you can dream it, you can do it. I'm proof of that. Good luck man, and I wish you the best. Hope to see you across the field in burnt orange one day with "TEXAS" across your chest. Never give up.

Good luck Bullfrog. Military experience and a few extra years of absorbing life's lessons will certainly give you the edge in motivation and discipline which is half the job. Train hard, hit the weights, run 40's, get some professional nutritional advice and build up your lower body strength. Special teams would be a good place to focus with your size and obvious aggressiveness. Hope you get to realize your dream man, it makes us all better when guys like you show us the way.

Good luck and HOOK'EM!! You can definitely do it, especially if you add that weight. A good buddy of mine walked on to UT's team 5 years ago. He was a 5'10, 190lb ex QB out of San Angelo. He made it through tryouts, the bulked him up (he's close to 220-230 now) and moved him to scout team LB. He played 4 downs in 4 years, loved every second and said he wouldn't trade a minute of it (the big gold #1 ring he's got sure helps, too!). Anyways, moral is: if you've got the drive, they'll help you to make the team and work on size.

Let us know how it goes, and HOOK'EM:)

Never give up. hey could you do me a favor and let me know what kind of stuff they did for you when you tried out? ill prolly end up playing something in the back field (maybe FB if i can add the weight i need to.) but anyway, like what kind of stuff they look at, like 300 yd dash, i know the 40. maybe incline? idk i have about a year or more to try and get where i need to get.

Try-outs were just like any other football combine, 40 yard dash, 5-10-5 shuttle, vertical, and how many reps you can do at 225 on bench. If you stood out in that, they let you come out and practice for a week, at least that's how it went at A&M for me. How much are you weighing now?

I know a guy that was the scout team the year Texas won the National Championship and he got a big ring to show for it. Never played a down

best of luck
screw the 40's

run quarters
it will help you
get stronger and play longer
thats what its all about

ok so you run 4.5
and you are dead after 5 plays

run repeat 400's
8 with 7-10 min rest
(or about the time it takes you to walk to the 300 make and back slowly )

also 300's are good
(the human body can run full speed for 300m) btw

look for a time of under 40

or you can do the old 352's

or a 40 second full sprint
and try to go farther each day

Examples of Speed Endurance Workouts

a) 15 x 100 2 minutes rest

b) 12 x 150 5 minutes rest

c) 12 x 200 8 minutes rest

d) 10 x 300 8 minutes rest

e) 6 x 350 10 minutes rest

f) 5 x 450 10 minutes rest

walk the distance you ran for rest

just some ideas

Im sure some one will fire away here

best of luck
follow your dream

and thanks for your service to our country

While you need to work on your endurance, it is crucial that you also work on your footwork and your short distance speed (quickness), because the coaches are more than likely not going to see if you can run the mile in under four minutes, but if you can run a decent 40 time and you have good lateral movement. In other words, they're going to see if you're an athlete, not a marathon runner, so keep that in mind.

ive got pretty good short burst speed, obviously nothing that would be like a Jamaal Charles or VY...but definately something that they can use for scout team. i know this isnt really saying much, but there isnt anyone that i know that can out sprint me. they can get me in the 2 mile, but sprints no one can out do me. i havent clocked a 40 time since high school, but i would love to get someone to time me on the 40 sometime soon.
