Sports Addict: Let football fever begin...
By Denton Ramsey, Managing Editor

Believe it or not, there's still quite a bit of sports news buzzing about as the summer sun beats down on our town.

And most of the news centers on Texas' favorite sport.

That's right - football fever has already begun.

7-on-7 Bulldogs go 3-0 at Rice, fall in 'final four'

First and foremost, our Bulldogs football squad is gearing up for the regular season with some 7-on-7 scrimmages.

The Bulldogs competed in a tournament held at Rice University in Houston this past weekend with a chance for a bid into the 64-team state tourney.

Marlin was placed in the Pool B Bracket at the Qualifying Tournament, joining teams such as Lavilla, Orangfield and Hitchcock in competition at Rice.

The winner of each pool then met up in the title game on Saturday afternoon.

At stake: the title winner receives an automatic bid to play in a field of 64 teams vying for bragging rights in the Texas State 7-on-7 Championship.

And Marlin went undefeated in their pool, sweeping out the competition en route to a 3-0 record in Pool B.

Marlin defeated Orangefield in game one, 12-6, prior to squeezing out a victory against Hitchcock in game two, 22-21.

The Bulldogs beat out Lavilla in their third and final game in Pool B, advancing to the semi-finals with a 19-12 victory.

With their perfect record in Pool B play, the Bulldogs advanced to the final four in the competition, as well as becoming one of the four state qualifiers.

However, the Bulldogs defense stumbled in their 'final four' match-up against Diboll as Marlin fell, 42-14.

Speedy Bulldog RB Miller commits to Cowboys

In other pigskin news, it looks like we have a local back heading to the Cowboys of Oklahoma State to compete in the Big 12 next season.

Running back Travis Miller (5'11", 185 lbs.) has verbally committed to play football next season with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

And although verbal commitments are not binding, it appears as though the local Marlin product will be heading to a school in need of a speedy back.

One thing is certain - Miller will soon have a chance to make 'Miller Time' ring true in Oklahoma after joining the Big 12 conference.

Check our website for updates on Miller and be sure to keep your eyes open for an upcoming feature on Miller joining the Cowboys.
