Officials Say Automated Toilet At Beach Eliminates Cleaning Crew

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- It sounds like something out of "The Jetsons": a bathroom that self-cleans, locks itself and calls for help if it thinks you've been in there too long.
Fort Lauderdale is planning to try one such automated public toilet at the beach this year. City officials said it will save money in the long run because a daily maintenance crew won't be needed.
The toilet plays soothing music, but can be a little bossy, too. It regulates how many toilet paper squares you can get, and has a time limit. Dally too long, and the door flies open with a siren sound.
It locks itself after hours, and has a self-cleaning floor and toilet seat.
And if it goes haywire, there's an escape hatch in the roof. Officials said the one-room public toilet will also be hurricane proof.
