exarkana Liberty-Eylau made the most of its first appearance at the University Interscholastic League state baseball tournament by capturing the Class 3A championship last year.

Now the Leopards are back for more.

Bolstered by the return of four starters, Liberty-Eylau (30-5) is out to defend its title after reaching the final four for the second straight season. As the Leopards prepare for Wednesday's semifinal against Sinton (29-5-1) at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock, longtime coach Rick Fowler said the team didn't do anything special to get there.

"They just went out and played good baseball," said Fowler, in his 24th year at the helm. "It's not rocket science. We had two good pitchers on the hill, and the offense got the crucial hits when we needed them."

That's evident by the way Liberty-Eylau tore through the playoffs after earning a first-round bye as the District 16-3A champions.

The Leopards dispatched Crandall 6-2 and 12-2 in the area round to set up a regional quarterfinal matchup against Athens. Liberty-Eylau swept the Hornets 4-1 and 10-0, victories that propelled the team to a convincing sweep of Commerce (13-0, 6-0) in the regional semifinals.

Playing against Celina for the Region III championship, the Leopards posted 2-0 and 7-1 victories to secure a spot at the state tournament.

It helped to have a good nucleus to work with.

Zach Fowler, A.C. Hollins, Clay Jeffirs and Will Middlebrooks were starters when Liberty-Eylau beat Falfurrias 2-1 in last year's championship game. All four are back in the starting lineup, while the other five spots were filled by returning lettermen.

This season, Fowler and Middlebrooks have made the most impact -- mostly with their arms.

The seniors are a combined 26-1, with the right-handed Middlebrooks, who signed with Texas A&M, undefeated at 13-0. A left-hander, Fowler is 13-1 after going 6-2 a year ago, including the win against Falfurrias.

Fowler the coach isn't sure which pitcher to start on Wednesday, but Gene Kasprzyk knows both are capable of doing the job.

"Those guys are the heart and soul of their team," the longtime Sinton coach said. "They really make the team go."

Fowler expects the Pirates to be ready to play, but doesn't expect the Leopards to go down without a fight.

"They're excited about getting to go back and I'm sure Sinton is excited about it, too," he said. "When you're one of the top four teams in the state, you have to be proud of an accomplishment like that. We just don't want to say we were there. I don't see any reason why we can't win it again"

Does LE still have the coach that went crazy during while playing Forney a couple year ago? He threw a water bucket onto the field. He had every right to though, it was a bad call lol.

Sinton knows challenge L-E presents in 3A semifinals
By: Louie Avery - Texarkana Gazette - Published: 06/06/2007

ROUND ROCK, Texas—Liberty-Eylau will not sneak up on anyone at Dell Diamond at the UIL 3A State Baseball today and Thursday.
That might have been the case last June when the Leopards took a 24-14 record into their first-ever Final Four appearance and winning the championship by knocking off top-ranked Bridge City and Falfurrias.

Fourth-ranked Liberty-Eylau (30-5) hopes to defend that title, beginning at 4 p.m. today in the semifinals against fifth-ranked Sinton (29-5-1), which eliminated Falfurrias in the Region 4 final. The other semifinal contest features second-ranked Abilene Wylie (33-3-1) and sixth-ranked Jasper (31-7). The winners meet at 7 p.m. Thursday for the crown.

“It’s so special to go back,” veteran L-E coach Rick Fowler said. “There is some nostalgia, but we just want to enjoy the moment. This year we haven’t slipped up on anyone. We’ve had a target on our backs the entire season and I’m so proud of how we’ve responded.

“We kind of know what to expect this year, and we’ve got a routine that we want to stick to. Our kids are ready and they’ll give all they’ve got. We know little about Sinton except that they beat a very good Falfurrias team to get here, and they’ve got great tradition.”

Sinton is making its seventh appearance at the Final Four, the latest in 2003. The Pirates eliminated Pleasant Grove in the 1999 semifinals.

“We know Texarkana (Liberty-Eylau) has two great pitchers (Will Middlebrooks and Zach Fowler),” Sinton coach Gene Kasprzyk said. “Those guys are the heart and soul of their team, but we’re concerned with what we do, not what our opponent does. We’ve got to take our play to the next level.”

Middlebrooks (12-0) is the likely starter for L-E against the Pirates, who will counter with either junior Joseph Alaniz (12-1) or sophomore Josh Rodriguez (11-2), both right-handers.

L-E’s ace has hurled three consecutive shutouts—18 innings—in the playoffs, allowing a total of five hits, while walking four and striking out 35. The Leopards’ big right-hander is expected to go high in Thursday’s Major League draft.

The Pirates’ offense features seven players hitting over .300. Second baseman Robert Dunlap is high at .393. First baseman Andres Alaniz (.379) and shortstop Shane Segovia (.366) are considered by Sinton’s staff to be two of their best weapons.

Sinton comes into the tournament with a 17-game winning streak, including playoff series sweeps of Port Isabel, Rio Hondo, Devine and Falfurrias.

Other tentative starters for the Bucs are catcher Justin Moreno (.307), third baseman Anthony Trevino (.344), left fielder Matt Villarreal (.333), center fielder Josh Ring (.333) and right fielder Jeremy Carranza.

Kasprzyk thinks his team has an advantage in facing the Leopards.

“I think we’ll really be focused playing the defending champions,” he said.

As is the case with pitching, the Leopards’ offensive leaders have been Middlebrooks and Fowler, hitting .559 and .480, respectively, before L-E’s series with Celina. Middlebrooks has 19 doubles, two triples and six home runs. Both players are threats on the basepaths with a combined 40 stolen bases.

“Everyone should know our starting lineup Wednesday,” the elder Fowler said. “We’ve got eight kids who have started 35 games, and another who has played 34.”

Catcher Clay Jeffirs and infielder Acie Hollins are returning starters from last year’s championship game. Jeffirs has been solid behind the plate and at the plate with a .330 average. Hollins will start at shortstop today if Middlebrooks is on the mound. He has also been a consistent contributor on offense, hitting .333.

Fowler had five holes in his lineup at the start of the season, but found capable replacements in first baseman Ricky Rushing (.347), third baseman Cory Cook (.272), left fielder Eric Wells (.330), right fielder Patrick Dukes (.359) and infielder/outfielder Stedmon Dewberry, who had big hits in both of L-E’s wins over Celina.

L-E left Texarkana Tuesday morning, planning an afternoon workout at McLennan Community College in Waco.

The Leopards’ games at Dell Diamond will be broadcast by KCMC (740 AM).

Rick Fowler has been coaching baseball at LE for a LONG time. I guess it was him ... lol!
