Near the end of the Civil War some Confederate Soldiers were smuggled into Canada and they invaded a town in Vermont near the Canadian border. This was in retaliation on a small scale for what the North was doing in Georgia and Atlanta. The Confederate Soldiers took over the town but due to heavy rains were not able to inflict as much damage even though several businesses were set on fire. They fled to Canada. Even thogh the damage was not extensive it did cause enough fear in the North to pull some troops from the lines to guard the border. Canada was not involved in the invasion and the Confederates had gathered secretly. After the raid the Confederates fled into Canada while Northern troops pursued them illegally crossing over the border without permission from Canada. This was to make Canada mad. The Conferates though hotly pursued came across some Canadian policemen and surrendered to their custody just before being overtaken by the Northern troops. The Northern troops demanded custody of the Confederates which were denied by the Canadian police. This made the North mad but Canada was also mad that they came across their border without permission. The Canadians kept the Confederates in custody. The North claimed they were criminals and vandals but the Confederate soldiers said it was an act of war. (Apparently the North forgot what they had done to Georgia and Atlanta). Due to the war and communication problems there was much delay while the Canadians without the cooperation of the North tried to communicate with the South to determine that it was an act of war. It took time and by the time they found out that it was an act of war the war was already over and the Confederates were free to go home. The Conferates remained in Canada for a while after their release until it was safe to return home in the South. One of the Confederate soldiers met a Canadian Lady and got married to her and remained in Canada for a good life there.

Sam Houston quote - "Texas can exist without the United States. But the United States cannot, without great hazard, exist without Texas."

The thing that is most comical about Vermont is it is the Liberal hotbed in this country that has tried to control every possible aspect of life thru the EPA, environmentalism, regulations, court cases to tie up things they don't like and the like. So the idiots who have mostly caused the issues they complain about really mean that the world does not revolve enough around their world view, i.e. Bush and conservatism etc. What a joke, and a bad one at that. But at least it is funny enough to get a chuckle.
