Corpus Christi goes wireless Friday

Internet service provider EarthLink Inc. is expected to begin selling subscriptions Friday for its wireless network in Corpus Christi.

The Atlanta-based company, which has contracted with the city of Houston to build a 640-square-mile network by the end of 2009, is offering Corpus Christi residents monthly rates of $6.95 per household for the first six months, and $19.99 a month after that.

Customers who sign a one-year contract will receive a free wireless modem that strengthens the signal for indoor users.

Corpus Christi was one of the first cities in the country to build a wireless network in 2003, largely for public-safety purposes. After city officials recognized the potential for residents and businesses, they sold the network to EarthLink in March. Since then, the company has been strengthening the network by adding more transmitters around the city — typically more than 30 per square mile — and testing its performance.

About three-quarters of the 55-square-mile network is up and running, according to EarthLink officials, who offered a free trial period last month. Residents within that area can subscribe now. The remainder of the project is expected to be completed by September.

Houston Chronicle reporter Dwight Silverman reported on his TechBlog earlier this week that EarthLink's signal in Corpus Christi was much improved over the connection he got several months ago when the city owned the network.

"While it's not as zippy as my parents' (private) network, it's certainly quite usable — even indoors, through a couple of internal walls inside a brick home," Silverman wrote.
