Do you know how your school decided on its mascot?

How on earth does somebody decide they want to be the Hippos or the Gobblers!?! ;)

Falfurrias is the Jersey's. Used to be quite a few dairys in that area and Falfurrias sweet cream butter was made there, too.

Turkey Ranching was a huge business around here at the turn of the century right on up to the 70's. Farmers use to herd their flocks by the tens of thousands down the streets of Cuero to market. Thus came the name of the Gobblers.

Our mascot did not become the Fightin' Gobblers until the 1970 when Buster Gilbreath became HC. After losses to Schertz Clemens and East Central coach Gilbreath told the players that we were being laughed at and called Turkey's. He said to start now and shut there mouth's up the next season. We did just that and went to state in 1970.

Thru Jr. High the 7th grade team was called the EGGSHELLS and 8th Grade Turklets. Coach Gilbreath said all the teams would be called Gobblers to instill a winnig Attitude.

LEGEND OF HUTTO HIPPOS

It is said the hippopotamus came into vogue at Hutto, a community in South Central Williamson County about eight miles west of the Taylor Ducks, after one of the mammals strayed from a carnival which came to town. The hippo wandered into a nearby creek seeking its natural habitat and remained free several days. When carnival officials located it and tried to lure it out of the creek bottoms' good and cool water, it became belligerent.

The ordeal of re-capturing the ferocious animal was so ingrained in the citizens' minds that when Hutto opened its first 11 grade school later that year, it chose to name its athletic teams the Hippos.

Today, Class AAA Hutto's Hippopotami are called "THE HUSTLIN' HIPPOS," since the animals are known to run as fast as man and gallop at a faster pace for shorter distances.
