Softball: Marcus tops Northwest; wild weekend over
Flower Mound Marcus has been the queen of the one-game series in Texas high school softball this year. Saturday evening - after several weather delays, suspended play and an unexpected tour west of Fort Worth - Marcus earned its first trip to state.
Sarah Draheim hit a walk-off home run opposite field in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Marcus a 1-0 win against Justin Northwest and all-everything pitcher Brittany Barnhill in Abilene. The teams, originally scheduled to play a best-of-3 series, were forced to play a one-game playoff after weather put a damper on plans throughout the weekend.
This game started at 6 p.m. Friday, and play was suspended with both teams scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game ended roughly 45 minutes ago (it's 11:50 p.m. now). The teams changed field locations three times on Saturday, moving from Saginaw Boswell to Weatherford's Hall Middle School to Abilene Christian University because of inclement weather.
Be sure to read all about it in Sunday's SportsDay. Congratulations to Marcus, who now, because of a crazy weekend, will have a great war story to tell in 10, 20, maybe 30 years.
