It's a moot point now, but I'm curious to see what others think.

Follow the link to check out the pic and let me know what you think.

Did he touch the base?

It's hard to tell. But for the ump to make that call, he'd better be darn sure that he missed the bag.

its IMPOSSIBLE to tell from those pics ... its a judgement call, and as a previous poster said he better miss the base by a bunch (its gotta be obvious) before that appeal is upheld

lol. Sounds like the guy that runs forneysports.com, he has a picture that 'clearly' shows a call was wrong on every single game page.

No TD

One of many bad calls. The picture clearly shows that the Pearce receiver was out of bounds at the moment the ball arrived. The official in the picture was in perfect position to make the call but didn't.

It was rumored that one of the officials was seen wearing a Homecoming Mum.

haha that pic dose not clearly show him to be ob when he caught it you cant really tell on either this pic or the jasper baseball one but like has been said as an ump if you make that call in that big of a game there should be no doubt about it

In the photo no part of his foot is on top of the bag. I could call that a missed bag and sleep well about it. That is why you are supposed to be on the bag not "beside" it.

You don't have to be on top of it, you just have to touch it. Or else it would be impossible to slide and not be out

the way this kid was rounding the bag he better hit some part of the top of the bag, or else he needs to learn how to run the bases. do not come up and say my toe caught the bag. in the football picture, from that angle, there is no way you can tell if there is any space between his foot and the line. the camera dude needs to better position himself...

it looks like his left foot touched the base.

it looks like he is touching it to me.. it can be hard for umpires to see if players touch all the bases sometimes because they are busy watching the ball.. That being said his foot was close enough to the base and he was running the base as most coaches tell you to, with your inside foot on the inside part of the base (supposedly gives you a better push off).. All things considered I think this guy touched the base

what? the side of the bag is just as much part of the bag as the top ...

It is when you slide into it. Not when you run by it. It is difficult at best to determine if contact is made in a base running position as opposed to a sliding position because in a sliding position you wind up where? on top of the bag.

you are right as far as what is best to see - but as far as the rulebook goes there is no distinction.

That is my point. Hard to tell if you touch it or not unless you are visibly on the bag. If your foot comes down flat and it is not on the bag, I call it a miss or a near miss. And in the photo it sure looks flat.
