Sinton comes away with win
In sloppy contest, Pirates score all 7 runs on errors

By Lee Goddard

To err is human and, Thursday night, it definitely was Devine.

The Warhorses put a twist on Alexander Pope's old maxim in the opening game of the Class 3A baseball regional semifinals. Devine committed seven errors, leading to all five Sinton runs. That helped the Pirates claim a 5-3 victory at Calallen High.

The Warhorses will get one more chance to clean up their act as the best-of-three series will resume with Game 2 at 3 p.m. Saturday at the San Antonio ISD Sports Complex. A third game, if necessary, will follow.

Sinton (26-5-1) gained the edge because, while the Pirates had their lapses in the field, they were nowhere close to the self-inflicted damage Devine (21-11) did to itself, as six different Warhorses were charged with errors.

"It was just ugly baseball," Sinton coach Gene Kasprzyk said. "We didn't execute well. They really didn't make plays either. Not the caliber of baseball you would expect at this level at this time of the season. But, we'll take a win at this stage."

That free support helped Pirates starter Josh Rodriguez (9-2), who tossed a complete game. While he gave up seven hits, Rodriguez struck out nine and, unlike Devine, got the timely out when needed.

Michael Nicholson, the Warhorses starter, didn't make it out of the fifth, through no fault of his own. He entered with a 2-1 lead and, by the time the inning was done, he was out of the game, trailing 5-2 with no earned runs surrendered for the contest.

"You're not going to win a ballgame with seven errors," Devine coach George Villa said. "I thought our pitchers pitched well and did what they were supposed to do. We got ground balls when we needed to. We got fly balls when we needed to. We just didn't make the plays.

"In baseball, once the floodgates open, it's hard to shut down. The sad thing is, we had seven errors, but we were still in the ballgame."

Sinton's Robert Dunlap twice had singles -- in the first and fifth innings -- and twice was able to get extra bases due to Devine miscues. That led to two runs from Dunlap, with him scoring both times on sacrifice flies.

The Pirates managed six hits, but the errors compounded the pressure Sinton was able to put on the Warhorses' defense. And, with free bases, the Pirates had a few solid at-bats, with a pair of sacrifice flies, and an RBI single from Andres Alaniz driving in runs for a 3-2 lead.

Devine then added another assist as, with one out and runners at second and third, Joseph Alaniz's dribbler back to the mound was fielded by reliever Ross Shoemake, who fired wildly to home. That scored two more runs, giving Sinton a 5-2 lead.

Sinton 5, devine 3

Devine 002 001 x--3 7 7

Sinton 100 040 x--5 6 2

Josh Rodriguez and Justin Moreno. Michael Nicholson, Ross Shoemake (5) and Josh Weber. W Rodriguez. L Nicholson. 3B Ben Dossey (D).
