Forney softball team tops McKinney North

PLANO – Considering how many pitches Forney had pulled just foul down the left-field line, it was only a matter of time before one fell fair.

That moment came in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore Shelby Brogdon's line drive drove in three, helping Forney defeat McKinney North, 6-3, in Game 1 of a best-of-three Class 4A Region II final at Plano West.

Forney (33-8) is one game away from making its first state tournament appearance since 1999. Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Plano West. A third game, if necessary, would be played at 4 p.m. Saturday, also at Plano West.

Forney had seven hits off Florida signee Kristen Adkins. But none were bigger than Brogdon's, which came after McKinney North had tied the score at 3 in the sixth on Kelsey Schendt's RBI single.

"We've fought back all season," Forney coach Cassie Crabtree said. "We've played in nine-inning games, 12 innings. We've been down by three. We just don't quit."

Forney opened the seventh with singles by Ashley McCarroll and Erica LaFlore. Mallory Mitchell reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Brogdon followed with her bases-clearing hit.

"It feels good to know that you can come through for your team," said Brogdon, a first baseman.

Forney pitcher Britney Benedict recovered nicely after giving up two runs in the first inning. Benedict retired 14 of 15 batters after Schnedt's two-run double in the first gave McKinney North (31-7-1) a 2-0 lead. Benedict, who has signed with Blinn Junior College, allowed four hits and struck out eight in the complete-game victory.

Forney scored three times in the fourth inning to take the lead. Brogdon opened the inning with a walk and Sarah Bell reached on an error– McKinney North's second of the game. Brogdon scored on a single by Casie Campanello and Bell came home on a fielder's choice. Kallan Thompson singled in the third run.

"We had some defensive mistakes that got in our heads," McKinney North coach Debbie Evans said. "That came back to haunt us."

FYI, today Woden won game two 5-0, then Prarieland won game three 11-0 to advance to Austin.

no word on Forney-MN ... Sulphur Springs may have a weather situation
