Wharton's Roberts hired at New Caney

Russell Roberts made it clear he wanted to continue coaching when he was reassigned from his position as athletic director and head football coach at Wharton in March.
Roberts will be able to do so after being named the head football coach at New Caney on Tuesday night by the New Caney school district board of trustees.
Roberts has been a head coach for 31 years and has an overall record of 182-147-4. He was the head coach at Wharton for nine seasons, had a record of 49-47 and led the Tigers to five playoff appearances in the last seven seasons.
Wharton had a 7-4 record last season, going 6-1 in District 24-3A competition before losing to Giddings in the Division II bi-district playoffs. Tidehaven athletic director and head football coach Gary Van Sant was selected last month to replace Roberts at Wharton.
"I have had a lot of time to think about it," Roberts said of his reassignment at Wharton. "If I had told them I would coach until the end of my contract (2007-08 school year) and then retire, I'd probably still be there. But I told them my true intentions and they decided to make a change. I'm excited about the opportunity to keep coaching and the opportunity to do something I've never done."
Roberts has coached a team to the playoffs on every level but Class 4A and 5A.
New Caney had a 4-6 overall record and went 4-3 in District 21-4A last season. Roberts expects New Caney to become a Class 5A school in the upcoming University Interscholastic League realignment and reclassification.
