H.S. Football: Monahans, Snyder kick off Madness again

Monahans and Snyder might be hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
Literally.
If they can, then maybe they will not have their season-opening football game delayed 2½ hours by lightning like last year. Monahans eventually beat Snyder 12-7.
The rematch between Monahans and Snyder kicks off the schedule for the second ASCO Midland Football Madness at Grande Communications Stadium on Labor Day weekend. They will play at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30, organizers announced on Tuesday.
“With the weather this spring, you never know what will happen,” Monahans head coach Mickey Owens said. “It’s a great experience the first week of the year. Being on a Thursday night, the first game of the year, being a 3A we don’t always get to play in that kind of a stadium.”
The only disappointing aspect of playing Snyder again is that it will mark the fourth time in two years that the teams will have met, after playing in the playoffs in 2005 and 2006.
“We didn’t anticipate that,” Owens said. “That’s kind of tough playing them in the first game and the playoffs, but it’s getting to be a good rivalry with them.”
Midland Lee and North Crowley play at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31, while Midland High and Rockwall play at 11 a.m. Sept. 1. In last season’s Madness, the Rebels lost to Rockwall and the Bulldogs lost to North Crowley.
Midland Trinity and Water Valley will play in a six-man game at 6 p.m. Sept. 1. Water Valley won 61-57 in 2006.
The sponsors tried to add a game on Friday afternoon, but they were unable to finalize details.
