ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Angelo State advanced to the NCAA Division II Baseball World Series for the first time with a 3-2 triumph over Montevallo in the ''if necessary'' championship game of the South Central Regional tournament Monday afternoon.
The Rams opened the regional with two straight wins before falling to Montevallo 5-4 in Game 7. ASU responded by reeling off three consecutive victories to claim the regional title in just the third year of the program.
ASU now advances to the eight-team NCAA Division II Baseball World series, set to begin Friday in Montgomery, Ala. The Rams' first game is Saturday against Franklin Pierce at 1 p.m.
This will be the fourth World Series appearance since 1997 for Lone Star Conference teams, with Central Oklahoma finishing as national runner-up in 1997, Southeastern Oklahoma winning the national title in 2000 and Abilene Christian making the field in 2003.
