If it is Darrell, he has been through a lot in his life. My wife, who is the niece of Darrell 's first wife, and I are sponsors for his oldest daughter's quincenera next month. I had heard that he was leaving Ingleside and either going to Sinton or Skidmore next year.

Ingleside coach knows how to overcome adversity

May 21, 2007 08:57 PM

INGLESIDE - You know the old saying: "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Ingleside coach Darrell Hesseltine has done just that, following back to back crises in his life. This is the Darrell Hesseltine story.

Darrell Hesseltine lost his wife 12 years ago to a liver injury, just four days after giving birth to their second child. Then four years ago, Darrell's 14-year old daughter, Nicole came down with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. She's now in remission, but the setbacks have made Hesseltine a wiser man.

"I've learned that life doesn't always go your way. You can think things out and there will always be the bumps in the road. Sometimes they're going to be a lot more difficult to handle than some of the others," he said.

Friday night football is big in Ingleside. The Mustangs take their football seriously. Coaches always talk about dealing with adversity, and there's plenty of it in sports. But when Hesseltine talks about overcoming adversity, he's loud and clear. The Mustang players listen.

"You're always going to have to deal with adversity, and that's one of things that I've tried to teach them and instill in them that when things go bad you got to work hard. I just want them that these are lessons that they're going to learn, because things aren't always going to go their way later on in life."

Hesseltine often reminds his young players there's more to life than sports. He puts it all in perspective. After all, it is a long and winding road.

"One of the things I've learned from my coaches is that it's real important how you live your life, and what you make out of it, and we try to make the best out of everything."

Now, Hesseltine has since re-married, and his 12-year-old daughter Elizabeth is doing well. Nicole is now four years removed from her big scare, and her prognosis is good. So, things are looking up for the Hesseltine family.

A great news clip! It was extra special because his daughter is the same age as my oldest son. Good going Coach!
