What is a good lense for shooting football and other sports that will fit onto a Canon Rebel XTI?

how much do you want to spend? You'll also need a good external flash to go with your camera. I'm not incredibly familiar with the Canon but I would suggest registering at www.stevesforums.com and ask your question there. A guy named JohnG will likely be able to give you a good answer in the Sports Photography Forum. You can also post your question in the Canon dSLR forum and somebody else could help you.

Without having specific models to give you...you want to look for the following. I would recommend f 2.8 and you'll likely want at least a 70-200mm lens. Obviously something bigger is great...but then you'll want to carry a smaller camera (with a lens that will work in the 50-150mm range) as well for when the action is near your sideline/endzone.

Is that along the lines of what would be good?

This is the ideal lens for you...

You'll want the f2.8 aperture as it will let in more light and thus give you a faster shutter time. Of course you can go with a higher aperture and try to shoot at a higher ISO to offset the difference. The only trouble there is you can run into pictures that look like this because of the speed of the game and PP can't fix this kind of motion blur:

Also...I would strongly suggest getting a monopod:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Monopod-100-Cameras-Lenses/dp/B0002YE6EU/ref=acc_glance_foto_ai_3/002-0738943-9068067?ie=UTF8&m=A17MC6HOH9AVE6

It's great for when you're trying to shoot across the field and might be moving/zooming the lens during the action. Of course IS is a great thing to have in the camera...but the monopod is cheap and a worthwhile investment.

SI Photo Settings (http://www.siphoto.com/)

I shoot

at least 500 sec to stop action
640 works real well at 400 usually

A little to expensive there, needs to be under $1000. What about sigmas? I heard they are decent and cheap.

yes a very good alternative

Sigmas are definitely a nice alternative. Some people will rate them higher than the Canon's...it's a lot of personal preference though.
