Game time for LE and Commerce Wednesday is 7pm. Gametime for Saturday is 2:30 pm.

Anyone have a clue where Celina & Mineola are playing?

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

When do Lufkin and Jasper graduate? That's odd to be playing Thurs, Fri, and Saturday.

I would have loved to see Andrews and Abilene Wylie play on Thursday....but that is Greenwood's graduation!

"Graduation ceremonies will begin at a later time because the baseball team is in the bottom of the 17th inning.":D :D :D

Burkburnett knock decatur out. They showed up to play saturday and Decatur. Just a side note but Decatur had their prom friday night so that might have had something to do with them playing slopping.

Rita, I don't know a whole lot but here are a few things I do know:

19-10, 7-1 in District

Beat Bandera 4-3, 4-3
Beat Marion 2-3, 3-0, 5-2

I think most would say that advancing against Marion was an upset.

Their pitching is obviously their strength--11 runs given up in 5 playoff games.

They have a really good #1 pitcher, Ben Dossey. Must have some other good pitchers as well but I don't know who they are.

Josh Weber is an outstanding catcher and their top hitter. They had seven starters returning this year--all JRs and SRs. I believe they have 6 SRS starting with at least 2 other JRs--so they are an experienced team.

That's all I know.

Commerce prepares for defending state champs

By David Claybourn

Herald-Banner Sports Editor

COMMERCE — Trent Hemphill and Will Middlebrooks were once teammates and classmates while attending Wolfe City Elementary School back in the 1990s.

Starting tonight in Hallsville, they’ll be leading their respective baseball teams of Commerce and Liberty-Eylau against each other during the Class 3A regional semifinal series.

Game one is set for 7 tonight in Hallsville. It was moved from Mount Pleasant’s Northeast Texas Community College because of wet conditions. Game two is still planned for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Northeast Texas Community College, with game three to follow at that site if necessary.

Hemphill and Middlebrooks attended classes together at Wolfe City and were friends.

“We grew up together,” said Hemphill.

They also played on the same Wolfe City all-star teams.

But then Middlebrooks moved to the Texarkana area and Hemphill transferred to Commerce. Now both players are pitchers/infielders for their teams and rank among their team’s top hitters.

“(Today) will be the first time I’ve seen him in forever,” said Hemphill.

Middlebrooks, a 6-foot-4 right-hander, was voted Class 3A’s player of the year by the Texas Sports Writers Association last season after leading the 26-14 Leopards to the Class 3A state title.

Middlebrooks has won 25 of his last 26 decisions on the mound, going 15-1 last season and 10-0 this season. Last year his fastball reached 94 mph on the radar gun. Last week Middlebrooks’ fastball hit 95, according to his father Tom Middlebrooks, a former Wolfe City head coach who is now an assistant coach at Liberty-Eylau. Middlebrooks checked Athens on only one hit in six innings while striking out 11 during the Leopards’ 10-0 victory in the second game of the regional quarterfinal series.

Middlebrooks is also a standout shortstop and was an all-state punter in football, as well as playing quarterback and serving as placekicker. He’s signed a letter of intent with Texas A&M though pro baseball teams certainly have been keeping tabs on the big right-hander.

Hemphill owns a 13-3 record for the Tigers, including Saturday’s 14-7 victory over Hillsboro that clinched the regional quarterfinal series for the Tigers. Hemphill allowed four hits, four walks and three earned runs in five innings while fanning seven.

Both teams also have other strong pitchers who’ll factor in this series. Liberty-Eylau left-hander Zach Fowler, the son of Leopard coach Rick Fowler, owns a 10-1 record including a 4-1 victory over Athens in game one of last week’s series. Fowler has plenty of big-game experience, having pitched in the Leopards’ 2-1 victory over Falfurrias in last year’s state championship game.

Commerce right-hander Jonathon Cox owns a 13-2 record for the Tigers and is considered a hard-thrower than Hemphill. He plays third base when he’s not pitching.

Shortstop Shane Ashley had a big game for Commerce on Saturday, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in.

Center fielder Bobby Draughn drove in four runs with a double and a single, plus scored two runs.

Kayle Stotts scored three runs for the Tigers in that victory, while Eli Keith, Josh Pannell, Colton Anderson scored two runs apiece.

Commerce coach Mike Rave said the Tigers aren’t afraid to face the defending state champions.

“Our kids right now, they don’t care who they play,” he said. “We’ve discussed all year that we don’t play a team, we play an opponent.”

Just the same, Rave knows this series will be a tough one.

“Once you get to the semifinal round and the quarterfinal round the teams you see are of high quality,” he said. “You try to play mistake-free.

“This’ll be a real good test, they’re the defending state champions,” he said.

The winner of this series advances to the regional finals to face either Celina or Mineola. Those two teams are playing a best-of-three series that starts on Thursday in Forney.
