Cats scratched
Rio Hondo’s playoff journey ends
By ELADIO JAIMEZ
May 20, 2007 - 7:41AM

KINGSVILLE — The box score should read: Joseph Alaniz 4, Rio Hondo 0.
The Sinton Pirates beat Rio Hondo 4-0 to sweep their Class 3A regional quarterfinal playoff series Saturday at Nolan Ryan Field on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
But it was Alaniz that provided a solid outing form the mound and most of the offense the Pirates really needed.
The Sinton junior pitched a complete-game shutout striking out five while scattering six hits.

Meanwhile at the plate, Alaniz went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
“My pitching could have been better and everyone hit today,” Alaniz said. “Our offense and defense are good right now, but I think our pitching needs a little work. We’ll get a few more bullpen sessions in this week. We’ll be all right.”
Sinton (25-5) now plays the winner of the Devine-Marion series next week in the regional semifinals.
Just like on Friday, the Bobcats (16-13) had their chances in Game 2.

Rio Hondo stranded 10 base runners, including a bases-loaded situation in the second inning thanks mostly to Alaniz’s brilliant effort.
In the fifth inning Rio
Hondo trailed 3-0 but it looked as if the Bobcats were finally coming around on offense.
J.D. Martinez led off the inning by getting hit on the back. Rolando Sauceda then singled giving Rio Hondo two base runners with no outs. But Eric Jaime — pinch-running for Sauceda at first base — was picked off for the first out.
Alaniz then struck out Randy Castaneda and jammed Joshua Cordero, who was thrown out at first by the catcher.
The inning ended and for all practical purposes so had the Rio Hondo Bobcats’ season.

“He’s got a lot of moxie on the mound,” Rio Hondo head coach Steve Marroquin said of Alaniz. “He’s a tough guy. Just like the rest of the team. And you can’t get this far in the playoffs and leave that many men on base.”
Sauceda, Rio Hondo’s starter, was solid too until the fourth inning.
Through the first three innings, Sauceda (5-2) had only giving up one earned run on two hits and struck out three more.
But the Pirates weren’t going to stay quiet too long and exploded for two runs on three hits in the fourth extending their lead to 3-0 at that point.
With one out, Andres Alaniz reached on a single then scored on a RBI-double by Joseph Alaniz. Joseph Alaniz then scored on a RBI-single by Roy Perez.

The fifth looked like déjà vu all over again when Sauceda gave up a one-out double to Shane Segovia. But Sauceda jammed the next two batters forcing them to pop out and end the inning.
It didn’t matter because the Pirates were back to form by the sixth inning. Andres Alaniz led off the frame with triple and later scored on Joseph Alaniz’s second RBI-double of the day.
The Pirates eventually loaded the bases for Segovia in the same sixth inning. But the freshman Segovia struck out swinging avoiding further damage for the Bobcats who already trailed 4-0 at that juncture of the contest.

“I think this was good for our team to gauge where we’re at this point and where we want to be next season,” said Marroquin, who only loses two players to graduation. “I have a lot of these kids coming back and our goal next year is the state tournament. I’m really proud of these guys. We won a district title for the first time in five years and won our first playoff series ever last week. I’m very proud of them and our community for supporting us.”
Sauceda pitched seven innings and allowed four earned runs. He also struck out five but gave up nine hits. Sauceda issued only two walks.

Sinton took a 1-0 lead right away in the top of the first.
Robert Dunlap led off the game with a single after working a full count. Anthony Trevino then flied out to right field plating Dunlap for the quick score.
