A great loss to Texas football and Texas in general. He was and will always be the greatest coach in the history of high school football. Others may surpass his record, but will never be the legend that he is. God bless his family.

Not only was he a great coach that has influenced the positive direction of 1000's of young men, but he was a class act too. Back in the mid 80's we were in Brownwoods ditrict ( 4A-4 ) and had never in school history beaten Brownwood. Well we got lucky in '84, at Brownwood none the less, and after the game when we were in our dressing room, our coach said that Gordon Wood wanted to speak with our team. You could have heard a pin drop as we listened enthusiastically to every word the man had to say in the 2 minutes he shared with us. WHAT A CLASS ACT and a GREAT COACH. Here it is some 19 years later and that memory is still as fresh as the day I got to meet him. May God bless his family.

i had the chance to meet Coach Wood at coaching school in the summer of 2002....he asked me where i was working and I told him and that was pretty much it. I met him exactly ONE YEAR later and he remembered where i worked...who I worked for and everything. Coach Wood met thousands upon thousands of people through coaching and just in life in general. For a man that was 88 years old at the time he remembered me and made an effort to say hello to me. What a great man!

It was definitely a sad day at my office. The president of my company played on the '65 (I think) championship team. I had the pleasure to meet Coach Wood at the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame Banquet last spring. He was one of a kind.

Gordon Wood used to drive 2.5 hours one way to go to Lubbock and watch Texas Tech practice. When Bill Parcells was there, Bill said that Gordon wood constantly come over to give him tips, advice, etc. Bill said they became good friends.
