Wylie was doing well until Davis went down unexpectedly. Seeing as how the bullpen has typically pitched pretty well...it sounds like Wylie was in some sort of shock about losing their ace all of a sudden. Should be fun tmrw...

CLOVIS, N.M - In the first game of their Region 1-3A quarterfinal against Canyon, the Wylie Bulldogs started their ace pitcher while Canyon started its third-line pitcher.

For two and a half innings that's exactly how it looked too as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. However, the Eagle offense exploded after that and Canyon won 15-6 Friday night at Bell Park.

Wylie, now 27-2-1 must now win two games today against the Eagles to advance. The series resumes at 3 p.m. in Littlefield. Canyon is now 23-7.

''We didn't sign up for one game,'' Wylie coach Clay Martin said. ''This is just one-third of the way done.''

Wylie ace Cory Davis looked every bit the part and he sent the Eagles down in order the first two innings collecting five strikeouts along the way.

In the meantime, the Bulldogs offense was scoring three runs. Mason McNoll singled in Nathan Saltzgaber for the first run and then Joey Rustenhaven doubled in McNoll for a 2-0 lead. Rustenhaven then doubled in McNoll in the third inning to give Wylie a 3-0 lead.

After collecting five strikeouts in the first two innings, Davis ran into trouble and walking two of the first three batters he faced. After Canyon leadoff hitter Tyson Bainum worked him for a 2-0 count, Chance Bragg was brought in to replace him. Bragg ended up losing the decision.

''Cory's arm was bothering him a little bit,'' Martin said. ''We had to get him out of the game.''

The Eagles scored their first run on a passed ball. After that, the Eagles put up four more runs to take a 5-3 lead after three innings. The Bulldogs then tied the game in the fourth inning. Landon Lindley led off the inning by striking out but the ball went by Canyon catcher A.J. Krutsch and Lindley ended up safe at first base.

Saltzgaber then attempted a sacrifice bunt. Canyon started pitcher Nick Hogue picked up the ball and threw it into right field which advanced the runners to second and third base.

McNoll then grounded out to second base to score Lindley and cut the lead to 5-4. Saltzgaber scored on a passed ball to tie things up again at 5-5.

However, the Eagles came back with another five runs in the fourth inning. Highlighting the inning was a double by Colt Howey and a two-run homer by Keegan Neill that gave the Eagles a 10-5 lead and they weren't really threatened after that.

''We had some mental lapses that put us in a whole,'' Max Martin said. ''Anytime you give up three five-run innings you're going to be in a bind.''

Last season the Bulldogs lost the opening game of the regional quarterfinal series to the Eagles, but rallied the second day to win the last two games and advance.

''We'll show up tomorrow ready to play,'' Martin said. ''Hopefully things will be different.''

maybe this is the year that Canyon sheds the little step brother tag in baseball to Wylie also. The Eagles got it done in Football this season lets see if they can do it in more than one sport.
