My girlfriend's brother's fiance (they're getting married early October) just found out (he's on his way back from Scotland right now) that she has a cancerous tumor on her adrenal gland and she's going to be going into surgery on Monday to have it removed. They don't yet know how far along the cancer is or if it has spread. Depending where on the gland it is located, the survival rate varies between 10% and 95% in a 36-month window. There's a lot of uncertainty right now so your prayers are appreciated... :)

just wanted to give everybody an update...

The latest word I've received is that the tumor is on the outside of the gland and that type has the higher survival rate than if the tumor gets inside the gland. We should know in the next few days when/where the surgery will be but it looks like it will be at MD Anderson.

today we received some not so good news.

A 4th specialist was flown in from Indy (this guy is evidently an expert on adrenal cancer) and by the time that they ran tests...the cancer has spread into her right lung, her liver, and has caused numerous blood clots to develop in the artery that runs from her leg to her heart. She is in surgery right now here at Baylor Medical in Dallas as there wasn't time to try and transfer her to MD Anderson. Your prayers are appreciated for Katie, Ryan (her fiance...my g/f's brother), and her family and friends...

They decided to not do surgery last night as the doctor here in Dallas had no previous experience with this surgery. They are doing a biopsy of the tumor right now (it has grown from roughly a silver dollar size to approx 13"long in a matter of days) and will decide where to proceed from there. There is a doctor at MD Anderson who feels he can remove at least 90% of the cancer...but he can't get her in until Monday or Tuesday (I forget which right now). If he can do that...they'll do the surgery. Otherwise, it will be chemo first to try and shrink the cancer before doing the surgery. Will keep yall updated...

They received confirmation today from her biopsy that the cancer is stage IV.

From webmd

However, survival for patients with stage IV tumors is usually less than 9 months unless a complete remission is achieved. To date, there is no convincing evidence that systemic therapy will improve the survival duration of patients with adrenal cancer

More prayers from Sinton Ad. Hopefully things will turn out ok. They are making more and more progress daily on this type of thing and they can do things they couldn't do just a few years ago so hopefully she will have a full recovery.
