Eight Northwest ISD schools remained in lockdown Friday afternoon as authorities searched in Denton County for a gunman who shot a man in the foot.

School district spokesman Rob Ludwig said that about 7,000 students at Northwest High School, Pike and Medline middle schools and Beck, Lakeview, Hughes, Roanoke and Hatfield elementary schools were affected. Mr. Ludwig said the lockdown, which was implemented about 10:30 a.m., meant that no one was allowed to enter or leave the buildings.

School district officials were hoping to make a decision on how to handle student pickup as the school day near its end. Mr. Ludwig advised parents to check the school district Web site at www.nisdtx.org. The school district also planned to alert parents through its phone messenger system.

The lockdowns came after a suspect entered Best Texas Metal in the 2800 block of Litsey Road about 10:15 a.m., said Tom Reedy, a Denton County Sheriff’s Office spokesman. The robber tied up two men at the business. When a third man walked in, the robber shot him in the foot and took his vehicle.

Authorities chased the suspect into the Chadwick Farm subdivision, located just southeast of Interstate 35W and State Highway 114. The suspect then left the vehicle and began wandering the neighborhood on foot. The man tried to enter a residence but the homeowner would not let him inside, Mr. Reedy said.

The man then stole another vehicle, a gray and tan Silverado pickup, and fled.

The shooting victim was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital where he was in stable condition, Mr. Reedy said.

The Northwest school district has a total of about 10,700 students and straddles Denton, Tarrant and Wise counties.
