Was just looking at the CC Hooks website to see who won the Bobblehead contest, Pence or Saccamanno (never did figure it out) but......

There is a poll on there regarding which South Texas Baseball team has the best shot at a State Championship. There are some familiar names ...sinton ...so you might want to vote.

Don't leave off Falfurrias just yet. And Rio Hondo is very good. Remember they had a great basketball team a few years ago.

I voted for Fal...just cuz I like the Jerseys mascot even though it doesn't make any sense. How many titles has Moody won now?

In the 1970s Freer had three playoff games with Rio Hondo in football. In 1972 Freer won a thriller 20 to 16. With seven seconds to go Rio Hondo was at the 8 yard line but threw two incomplete passes in the last seven seconds to lose. The next year Freer won rather easily. They played again in 1976 with both teams having losing records but enough wins to win district. Freer won 7 to 6 in a defensive game. Rio Hondo scored their td in the third quarter to make it 7 to 6 and since Freer had the tie breaker and defenses were ruling they went for two points but didn't make it.

So Rio Hondo has been competitive in the past and are not to be taken lightly.

Other "local" teams that have won state:

1983 - Kennedy
1984 - Odem

man...I could've swore that Moody won it back in the day when I lived down there. I know it seemed like they went to state every year though. I guess it must be the whole "region 4 is weak" reason that they don't win it that often ;)

Here is Duncanville + Abilene/Midland/Lubbock area. I left out the Houston area (Bellaire, Spring, Conroe, Klein, Sugar Land, Fort Bend) so that you didn't look bad ;)

Duncanville - 1975, 1976, 1990 (made state tourney in 1989, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002)
Lubbock Monterey - 1996, 1997 (state tourney in 1994, 2005)
Abilene Cooper - 1986, 1987 (state finals in 1993)
Andrews - 1999 state champs
Midland - 2001 state champs

Abilene Wylie - made state tourney in 1990 (lost to Freer :D), 1991, 1997, 2002 (lost to Sinton :p), and 2006
Big Spring - state finals 1992 and 1994
Frenship - made state tourney in 1993
Lubbock Coronado - state finals in 1995
Lamesa - state finals in 1995
Cross Plains - state finals in 1999 and 2000
Lubbock Cooper - state finals in 2005

I didn't look around for the old results to include Abilene High. I didn't know about Odessa and Pecos from back in the day. One other thought about Region 4...notice how every team is in a different classification.

Moody - 5A
Calallen - 4A
Sinton - 3A
Robstown - 2A

They had one dominant team in each classification. In 5A Region 1, you can look at every year and often find Duncanville, Abilene, Cooper, Midland Lee, Arlington Martin, FM Marcus, and Midland High running into each other in the regional semis and/or finals.
