Moody, T-M and Sinton to face stiff competition
By Stuart Duncan (Contact)

State-ranked Moody, Tuloso-Midway and Sinton dont appear to be satisfied with just making it to the regional semifinals this season.

All three will get their chance to take it a step further this week when they begin their three-game regional semifinal softball playoff series.

The fifth-ranked Trojans (28-6 overall) begin their Region IV-4A semifinal series with sixth-ranked Boerne at 8 p.m. today at San Antonio Blossom Stadium. Game 2 will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Cabaniss Field and Game 3, if necessary, will also be at Cabaniss Field at 1 p.m. Saturday.

(Boerne) is a tough team, said Moody coach Paula Rodriguez, whose team will be making its first regional semifinal appearance. Its going to boil down to which team plays with the most heart and shows the most dedication -- thats who is going to win the series and move on.

The District 30-4A champion Trojans swept regional quarterfinal opponent Mercedes by scores of 3-0 and 8-2, as Moody senior pitcher Brittany Johnson (25-5) yielded just one earned run (and two runs total) and five hits in that series. The District 27-4A runner-up Greyhounds, meanwhile, swept regional quarterfinal opponent Dripping Springs by scores of 8-3 and 5-2 to return to the regional semifinals.

Top-ranked Tuloso-Midway (29-2) also starts its regional semifinal series in San Antonio, as it battles fourth-ranked Cedar Park Vista Ridge. Game 1 will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the San Antonio ISD Complex, while Game 2 and Game 3 (if necessary) will be at the same site beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Were playing with a lot of confidence right now, said Cherokees coach Ronnie Fair, whose team reached the regional semifinals last season before falling to Boerne. Weve been to the regional semifinals four times since Ive been coaching here but have never gotten past this round. This group wants to be the first to do that. Thats been their goal since the beginning of the season and now were in position to do that.

T-M swept regional quarterfinal opponent Floresville by scores of 2-0 and 4-1 to return to the regional semifinals, as Cherokees freshman pitcher Emily Brittain (29-2) allowed just one run -- which included a 13-inning scoreless streak -- and nine hits in the series against the Jaguars. T-M also pounded nine hits in the series finale.

District 25-4A champion Cedar Park Vista Ridge clipped New Braunfels Canyon, 4-2 in its one-game regional quarterfinal playoff series.

The regional semifinal round also is quickly becoming old hat for fifth-ranked Sinton (31-6), which hosts District 26-3A champion Marion (25-9) in Game 1 of its Region IV-3A semifinal series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Game 2 will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Schertz Steele High School and Game 3 (if necessary) will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Goliad.

There really has been no let up by this team this season, said Pirates coach Andy Villasana, whose team reached the Region IV-3A championship game last year before falling to Columbia. Theyve had their minds set on our teams goals since Day 1 and theyve worked hard every day to obtain those goals. Last years defeat in the regional final has been a real driving force for our kids this year but theyve never looked ahead or past an opponent. This week is just another obstacle that were going to have to overcome.

District 30-3A champion Sinton is coming off its 4-0 one-game regional quarterfinal victory over Cuero, in which Pirates pitcher Kirsten Shedd (18-2) threw a two-hit shutout.

Behind ace pitcher Becca Hay, the Bulldogs blanked regional quarterfinal opponent Devine, 4-0 in a one-game playoff to reach the regional semifinals for the first time since 2003.

Bulldogs sink Pirates with 7th-inning surge
Marion puts up five runs in final frame for victory

SINTON — After hardly being able to touch Sinton softball pitcher Kirsten Shedd for six innings, Marion made the final inning a rough one for the Pirates.

The Bulldogs quickly snuffed out the euphoria of a sixth-inning Sinton rally, breaking through for five hits and gaining an edge off an error on the way to scoring five runs in the seventh. That gave visiting Marion a 6-1 victory Thursday night in the first game of the teams' best-of-three regional semifinal series.

Game 2 of the Class 3A playoff is set for 7 tonight at Schertz Steele High School. A third game, if needed, will be played at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Goliad.

That the Bulldogs' burst came half an inning after Sinton (31-7) scored the tying run with two outs was difficult to digest.

"That score is not indicative of how close the game was," Pirates coach Andy Villasana said. "They're a good ballclub, so we certainly can't allow ourselves to make the mistakes we made. We need to play ball the way were capable of playing."

For six innings, it appeared Sinton could gain the edge from Shedd's pitching. The pitcher struck out four and had surrendered only two hits entering the seventh, managing to overcome four errors behind her.

But, by the time the inning was done, Marion (26-9) had the upper hand, turning a 1-all tie into a 6-1 lead. With a runner on with the Bulldogs' third hit -- and two outs -- Shedd issued a walk.

Marion took advantage, as the next four batters managed hits and, at one point, the Pirates gave up an error -- their fifth of the game -- that cleared the bases.

The worst part for Villasana was that the hits were ones that just made it by the infielder or dropped in front of outfielders.

"That's tough. That's what's hard about this game," Villasana said. "We had a couple of balls just outside the reach of our infielders and outfielders. You can't really fault anyone for that. She hit her spots well and jammed the hitters. But, to their credit, they were able to get enough on the ball that it found its way out there.

The Bulldogs outburst came right after Sinton tied the game with two outs in the sixth inning with Kayla Dunlap's single bounding by pitcher Becca Hay and between the second baseman and shortstop to bring in the game-tying run.

Hay was every bit Shedd's equal on the other side. Hay also gave up three hits, while striking out five.

West Takes 1-0 Series Lead Over Van In Softball Regional Semifinals
By SHANE STARK
Staff Writer

ENNIS - West, perhaps known best for its Czech heritage, called checkmate in Game 1.

Senior Jordan Vannatta pitched a complete-game shutout and the Lady Trojans scored more than enough runs to beat Van, 2-0, in the opener of a Class 3A best-of-three softball regional semifinal at Ennis High School.

West (25-5) scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and a passed ball in the fourth, putting the Lady Vandals on the brink of elimination for the second straight series. Van (30-7-1) fell in the opening game of its regional quarterfinal against Liberty-Eylau last week, but rebounded to win two consecutive and continue its season.

Game 2 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Ennis. Game 3, if necessary, will be noon Saturday at Ennis.

Vannatta allowed six hits, struck out three and hardly was threatened. Van's best scoring opportunity against her came in the fourth when freshman Kayla Chitty got on base via fielder's choice. Two batters later, freshman Chelsea Smith singled to right field and Chitty rounded the bases toward home only to be gunned down at the plate.

Van senior pitcher Trish Crocker gave up eight hits and struck out two. In the first, she sent the first two batters down before West junior Haylee Sykora singled to start a two-out rally. Sykora then stole second and third with two outs, and scored for a 1-0 lead when Crocker fired a pitch high and outside into the backstop.

Crocker allowed only one hit over the next two innings, but was touched for three hits in the fourth. One hit was a leadoff triple by freshman Kristyn Kolacek, who later scored for a 2-0 lead on a passed ball charged to Van sophomore catcher Shelby Harris.

Sykora led West with a single and a double, while Smith and senior Christy Carter had two singles each for Van.

Devilettes oust Splendora
Thomas pitches shutout as Huntington overcomes nemesis

By Butch Cantrell

Friday, May 18, 2007

HUNTSVILLE — The Huntington Devilettes faced an old nemesis in the Splendora Wildcats in the Class 3A, Region III semifinals at Sam Houston State University Friday night.

Splendora have knocked the Devilettes out of the playoffs in the regional quarterfinals the last two years.

Huntington's Carlie Thomas delivers a pitch to the plate during Class 3A Region III playoff action at Sam Houston State University in Huntsille Friday night. The Devilettes ousted Splendora with a 1-0 win.

On Friday night, it was the same song, but a different verse as Huntington turned the tables by holding on for a thrilling 1-0 win over Splendora to advance to the regional finals.

"We worked on controlling tempo and control all week," Huntington head coach Ruth Wright said. "And the girls followed that gameplan with good execution tonight."

The game was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings before Huntington mounted a threat in the fifth inning. Jenny Winthrop led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Nikki Bowden.

However, she was called out on a fielder's choice to end the inning.

The Devilettes finally broke through with a run in the sixth inning. Huntington's Katie Mills reached second base on a two-base error by the Splendora right fielder and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Brittney Batten then came through with the key offensive play of the game as she lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Mills with the only run of the game.

However, the Devilettes had a few tense moments down the stretch. Splendora put a runner on third thanks to a trio of Huntington errors. But Thomas was able to work her way out of trouble, retiring the next two batters, to preserve the lead.

Huntington's defense had a strong night, with the exception of the sixth inning, as it retired 14 of the last 16 batters to come to the plate.

Thomas got the win, striking out six batters while walking only one.

Hitters for Huntington were Presley Modisette (1 single, 1 stolen base), Caitlyn Ivy, Mallory Brandenburg and Destiny Lovett (1 single), Batten (1 RBI), Jenny Winthrop (1 sacrifice, 1 walk), Nikki Bowden (1 sacrifice), Katie Mills (1 run) and Maria Yount (1 stolen base).

Huntington will face the Giddings/Waco Robinson winner in the regional final with a time and site to be determined.

Softball: Sinton capitalizes on miscues by Marion

Web Posted: 05/19/2007 12:59 AM CDT

Terrence Thomas
Express-News

Marion's Kelsey Luddeke trudged to the dugout, gathered her belongings and began the walk to the team's bus.
Her face was expressionless, but it spoke of the Bulldogs' mood after Friday's 2-1 loss to Sinton in Game 2 of a best-of-3 Class 3A regional semifinal series.

Marion played catch-up from the start and was unraveled by miscues — especially on the base path — at Steele High School.

"We were unfocused at the beginning and when they got that first run, I think for some of us it was a reality check, like, 'Wow, they can really beat us,'" Luddeke said. "We had to play at our maximum best, and we didn't. Not tonight."

Sinton, a regional finalist in 2006, took advantage and forced a decisive Game 3 at 11:30 a.m. today in Goliad.

The Lady Pirates (32-7) increased a 1-0 lead to two runs in the top of the sixth by capitalizing on a Marion error.

Designated player Eileen Hiracheta drew a two-out walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Caitlin Cave, who stole second and move to third on outfielder Jessica Gutierrez's single. Cave scored what proved to be the game-winning run when Marion catcher Laci Schupp tried to pick her off but threw the ball into left field.

"You can't make errors in a game like this when you're this far in the playoffs," Luddeke said. "We made a few tonight, and we're going to learn from that and come out (today) and hopefully play solid.

"We're going to put it behind us, that's for sure. But we're going to get mad and want revenge, and that's how we're going to come out (today) — hungry for a win."

Marion (26-10) closed within a run in the bottom half of the inning when shortstop Ashley Jacobsen reached on an error, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and scored on first baseman Megan Williams' single.

It was one of the few times the Bulldogs capitalized with runners in scoring position. Marion had runners at second in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but twice they were caught stealing.

Sinton set the tone early as second baseman Kacee Castillo drilled the game's first pitch for a single. She scored on outfielder Julie Rodriguez's two-out hit off Marion starter Becca Hay, who threw 22 pitches in the inning.

Softball: Medina Valley rides Keller to victory

Web Posted: 05/20/2007 12:08 AM CDT

Terrence Thomas
Express-News

Medina Valley's Crystal Keller stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, her team locked in another close game against Yoakum.

The teams had already played a 3-hour, 11-inning game and a nine-inning game in their Class 3A regional semifinal softball series, and signs pointed to Saturday being another long contest.

Keller had other ideas. She started and finished a seventh-inning rally, scoring the winning run as Medina Valley edged Yoakum 1-0 in the decisive Game 3 at Judson.

"I just really did not want to go extra innings again," said Keller, who pitched a four-hit shutout. "I wanted to get it over. I knew we needed to get a rally going."

The Panthers (31-10) advance to the regional final, where they will play Marion.

"I don't know what it is about these girls," Medina Valley coach Wade Womack said. "I wish I had the magic answer for you, but they just love the game."

Medina Valley rode the pitching of Keller, the defense of third baseman Mysia Proctor and the clutch hitting of first baseman Amanda Hilbig to victory.

Keller, a sophomore, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth when Yoakum second baseman Jenna Braden's grounder hit teammate Ashley Hagan as she ran between second and third, resulting in an automatic out.

In the seventh, Yoakum had runners at first and second but Keller escaped unscathed when centerfielder Jenna Haby made a leaping catch of a ball hit by Yoakum's Lauren Adamek.

"You know whenever the bases are loaded you just can't strike out a person every single time," said Keller, who had a one-hitter through five innings. "You have to use your defense — that's what they're there for."

Proctor paced a flawless defensive effort for Medina Valley, making back-to-back reflex stops of hard-hit balls down the third base line in the third inning.

"It really pumped me up whenever they make plays like that," Keller said. "I realize even if I'm not perfect all the time, they're going to be there and they're going to back me up."

In the seventh, Keller led off with a single, moved to second on Holli Rihn's sac bunt, and to third on a wild pitch.

She scored on Hilbig's infield single — the only earned run for the Panthers during the series. Their other nine runs came off errors.

"I was really nervous," Hilbig said of her game-winning hit. "(Andrea Schmit) calmed me down. She was like, 'Just think of winning the game and getting things done.'

"All you can do is focus on what's going on right then, right there."

Bulldogs bite back, end Pirates' season
By Stuart Duncan (Contact)
Sunday, May 20, 2007

The Sinton softball rallied late, but still fell to Marion 2-1 in nine innings in the Class 3A region semifinals Saturday in Goliad.

The loss ended Sinton's season after the Pirates split the first two games in the best of three series.

The Bulldogs (27-10 overall) advance to play Medina Valley in the Region IV-3A final later in the week, while the Pirates (32-8) were denied a chance to play for the regional championship for the second straight season.

Sinton, which was down to its last out in the game, rallied with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 1, only to lose two innings later.

"If you're going to lose a game -- this is the way to do it because our girls gave a great effort today and they never gave up," Sinton coach Andy Villasana said while fighting back tears after the game. "These girls have been resilient all season and they were again today."

Jackie Noriega's run-scoring double with two-outs in the seventh inning for the Pirates scored courtesy runner Miranda Hernandez -- who was running for Kirsten Shedd, who reached on an error -- with the game-tying run to send it into extra innings.

The Bulldogs responded in the ninth inning, however, as Laci Schupp's one-out double scored Ashley Jacobsen with the go-ahead run to give them a 2-1 lead.

Shedd (16-4) also pitched nine impressive innings for Sinton, as she allowed two earned runs on seven hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out six.

Megan Gonzalez, who was 3 for 4 with a double, and Mimi May (2 for 4) combined for five hits in the game for the Pirates.

For the record, Kirsten did not reach on an error - she hit a shot down the 3rd base line and it would have been an outstanding play by the 3rd baseman had she put a glove on it! That was a clean HIT! :nerd:
