GRAHAM - The state-ranked Wylie Bulldogs again proved to be too much for the Iowa Park Hawks Friday night in the opening game of their Class 3A playoff series.

Wylie's Cory Davis mastered the Hawks' lineup for the second time this season, and center fielder Nathan Saltzgaber killed a rally to end the game with a throw to the plate in the seventh inning and give the Bulldogs a 6-2 triumph for coach Clay Martin.

Davis, who beat the Hawks 9-0 earlier this season, overcame an early 2-0 deficit, struck out 11 and kept his record perfect at 11-0 with the victory to start the playoffs for Wylie after a bye in last week's bi-district action.

The best-of-three series to determine the Class 3A area champion will continue today at 1 p.m. with game two (to be followed by game three if necessary) at Steer Stadium.

Davis walked two of the first four batters he faced in Wylie's first game since April 24, but he recovered and pitched into the seventh before Martin called on Chance Bragg to finish the game.

''Cory did a great job on the mound,'' Martin said, ''but he kind of ran out of gas in the end. He made one mistake, and they hit it for a double to score two runs. But Chance came in and did exactly what he needed to do.''

The Hawks' Dusty Ross, the fifth batter of he game, doubled to score Kirk Morton and Cody Hicks, who reached base on Davis' first two walks.

Wylie quickly grabbed the lead by scoring three runs in its half of the first inning. Davis' RBI single scored Derek Saltzgaber, and Joey Rustenhaven followed with a two-run single to score Mason Macnoll and Josh Hilliard (running for Davis).

Wylie added another run in the second when Nathan Saltzgaber doubled and later scored on Macnoll's infield ground out, and the Bulldogs stretched the lead to 6-2 in the fourth when Macnoll's single sent Landon Lindley and Nathan Saltzgaber to the plate.

Davis survived a threat in the sixth when Iowa Park loaded the bases on singles by Ross, Chris Smoak and Jon Brown, but Troy Williams grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

In the seventh, Brycen Whitaker drew a walk from Davis to start the inning and bring Bragg to the mound in relief of Davis. Later after Bragg retired two Hawks, Ross singled to center, but Nathan Saltzgaber threw to catcher Martin Burleson to get Whitaker running from second base for the final out.

''Chance got a big strikeout,'' Martin said. ''They got a hit off of him, but Nathan made a great throw, and Martin made a great tag. When you execute like that, good things happen.''

Davis, who also struck out 11 in his earlier five-inning win over Iowa Park, fanned eight of the nine Hawks in coach Michael Swenson's starting lineup at least once each.

The Iowa Park starter, lefthander Jared Lytle, held the Bulldogs to six hits and fanned seven.

''He was throwing his breaking pitches for strikes,'' Martin said. ''We just didn't take advantage of the situations we had to break the game open. We'll have to do a better job of that Saturday.''
