:D :D I am one nervous mom - sitting at work while my youngest son is probably on his 2nd hole at the State golf tourney in Austin. We'll be there in the morning but the nerves will just be twice as bad up there. It just dawned on me while driving to work that no matter how the team ends up or if they medal or not- this is the LAST high school sporting event my son (along with the other seniors) will ever participate in. I've been following my boys in sports since 1989 when my oldest was in the 7th grade. I wonder how many green and white shirts I have :D :D Anyway - here's an article in the Victoria Advocate this morning - re: Yoakum and Cuero's golf teams...

Good Luck Gobblers and Lady Bulldogs :)

Lady Bulldogs, Gobblers after golf titles at new venue
May 10, 2007 - Posted at 12:00 a.m.
PAUL EBNER - ADVOCATE SPORTS WRITER
It's the same song, just a new verse for the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs and Cuero Gobblers.

Yoakum will be making its 26th straight appearance to the UIL state golf championships, while Cuero makes its fourth.

The only thing different today and Friday will be the venue they have played at the last several years.

Due to the remodeling of the Jimmy Clay course, this year's Class 3A state tournament as been moved back to the Morris Williams Golf Course, where the Lady Bulldog Nicole Albrecht won individual honors 10 years ago.

Both coaches, Yoakum's Nicco Brown and Cuero's John Fuqua, feel the move could be beneficial to their teams.

"I think it will even out the playing field because it's going to be new to everybody," Brown said.

"We've never scored real well at Jimmy Clay but we liked it and knew the routine," Fuqua said. "But the plus for us is everyone is in the same boat because no one has really played it all that much."

Both teams may like any edge they can get as both coaches are expecting a shootout for the girl's and boy's titles.

"They're good," Brown said of the Lady bulldogs' main competition - Andrews and Snyder - out of Region I.

Snyder and Yoakum are familiar foes having battle neck-and-neck the past four years for the state title with Snyder winning three, including the last two, and Yoakum one during that time.

This year Andrews moves down from the Class 4A ranks where they finished fifth last year at the state tournament.

In all, the three teams have won 19 state titles amongst them with Yoakum leading the way with eight, all in Class 3A. Andrews has six, all in 4A, and Snyder has five with three coming in 3A and two in 2A.

All three teams also return three key players from last year's state squads.

Yoakum returns senior Ashley Chumchal and juniors Hope Koenning and Helice Migl, while Snyder returns Ashley Lueckem Ashly Rodriguez and Shannon Mangis. Jennifer Joyce, Addison Long and Kaylan Brownlee return for Andrews.

Brown, no stranger to the state tournament herself, was a member of four state championship teams with the Lady Bulldogs and knows exactly what to expect at the event.

"This is state golf and just about anything can happen," Brown said. "As crazy as this game is, you have to come out and play your best on every single shot on every single hole and hope for the best."

Her team also know it has its work cut out.

"We're going to need to put two strong rounds together but I think we're very capable of doing it and winning the title," Chumchal said.

GOBBLERS KNOW THE COMPETITION

Just like Yoakum, Cuero is very familiar with its competition as well.

The defending state champion, Palestine, returns to defend its title. Graham, the runner-up also returns, along with Andrews and Medina Valley, who both dropped from the Class 4A ranks.

"Andrews is one of those teams like Medina Valley that has dropped down and I think both are the top two teams going in," Fuqua said.

Andrews won the Class 4A title in 1999 and made its last appearance in 200 with a fourth-place finish. Medina Valley took the bronze medal in 2005.

Cuero and Medina Valley battle head-to-head in the Region IV-3A tournament with Medina Valley taking a 28-stroke victory.

Experience could be on the Gobblers side as they return all five players from last year's team - Steven Bell, Donavon Sanchez, Johnny Spears, Austin Griffin and Gabe Villarreal.

"They know they all have to step up and play better," Fuqua said. "We've talked about it some of the low scores we shot last year and we haven't done that yet this year and they know they need to step up and do that.

"Medina Valley shot what we did last year so we know we're capable of doing that, we just haven't done it yet this year."

Crap, you're old. :D I would guess you have more green and white than I have purple  , since we didn't move here until 1995.

Good luck, lil44 & boys. Might as well claim him as my adopted son, since I have no golfers any more AND LH doesn't have any there. GO GOBBLER GOLF!

Best wishes to Johnny and team! I hope this tournament is memorable for them. Keep us posted Lorey!:D

As to the other, prepare yourself for some serious withdrawals. This certainly is an exciting and busy time for seniors (and their parents).:)

Thanks, I just opened the Corpus Paper and see where she is in a 5 way tie for 16th place. Hope she has a better day today.

She finished 6th last year, 7th the year before and 15th as a freshman.
