Bearkats in lead at Region IV-3A meet

Valley Morning Star

KINGSVILLE

— The first day of the Region IV-3A track and field meet at Texas A&M University-Kingsville went pretty well for Raymondville. The Bearkats qualified two athletes for the state meet and lead the overall boys’ team standings with 20 points. Yoakum is in second with 20 points. Thrower D.J. Rodriguez won the shot put with a toss of 52-feet, 2-inches. Rodriguez will also compete in the discus today Carlo Dominguez finished second in the long jump with a leap of 22-10 and will come into today’s triple jump as a likely favorite to medal considering he was the top Class 3A finisher at the regional qualifiers’ meet. “I’m pretty pleased with how we performed on the first day of the meet,” said Raymondville coach Tony Neimeir. The Bearkats coach was pleased with how is relay teams ran. The Bearkats 4X200 relay won its heat in a time of 1.29.5 and Neimeir sees them as one of the favorites. “I think it’s going to come down to between us and Cuero,” he said. The Bearkats also qualified their 4X100 relay team. No Valley girls qualified on the first day of the meet. The meet will conclude today.

Congrats to Raymondville on a very strong showing. Congrats to Port Isabel's Scot McGallicher on qualifying for Austin in the 100. I know the RGV will forever be dissed as having no speed, but it's nice to prove 'em wrong once in a while:)

 This was an AMAZING race to watch!!! So many lead changes in it was INSANE!! :D Couldn't ask for a better finish!!!

I had to take care of some other things today, so I missed all the other good stuff. Only caught the 200 meter dash, 1600 meter run & relay. :(

It was fun to watch all the prelims yesterday, but it wasn't the same. I was looking forward to watching Raymondville & Cuero go at in the relays. I heard from the fans that Raymondville was DQ'd in the 800 meter relay. :( That sucks! I think they would have been a shoe in for state!! Those boys could scoot!!

AND.....

a BIG   to those La Vernia girls!!! WOW!!!

Raymondville(who was in 1st) dropped the baton on the last exchange and did not finish today. Port Isabel, who had a very strong 800 relay team, was DQ'd last night for handing off out of the exchange zone:(

I hate to see those things happen..... :( I have a love/hate relationship with Relays - I LOVE to watch them, but close my eyes on the exchanges :p I didn't see the LaVernia girls run, but from looking at their times - they are smoking fast. The Jonas girl from LV is the neice of a good friend of mine here in Cuero - I was hoping she'd do well this year and she did  Also noticed Corey Baker's name - he was LV's QB and also played in the Regional Golf Tourney - very good all around athlete

Bearkats qualify seven for state meet

By PAUL CONATZER
KINGSVILLE — If last year’s Region IV-3A track meet was the agony of near misses for the Raymondville track squad, then this year’s edition was the ecstasy of redemption. After finishing third as a team last season, but not qualifying anybody for the state meet, the Bearkats qualified athletes in eight events during the meet held Friday and Saturday at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The Bearkats roll of honor reads like this: Andrew Hernandez, second in the 800 (1:59.49) and a leg on the first-place 1,600-meter relay; Carlo Dominguez, second in the triple jump (44-3¾) and second in the long jump (22-10) along with legs in the second-place 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay; Dustin Alejo, first in the 200-meters (22.08) and a leg on the 400-meter relay; D.J. Rodriguez, first in the shot put (52-2) and second in the discus (155-9); Gilbert Garza, legs on the 1600 and 400-relays; Manuel Cortinas, a leg on the 400-meter relay; and Jake Garcia, a leg on the 1,600-meter relay. All will be going to Austin for the state track meet set for May 11-12.

For Hernandez, there was a lot of personal redemption. Last year, Hernandez came into the 800-meters as one of the favorites but disqualified himself when he stepped
out of his lane. This year was different as Hernandez finished second in the 800 and then turned in a stirring anchor leg in the 1,600-meter relay as the Bearkats turned in a school record time of 3:22.94 to win the meet’s final event.

“This feels awesome, especially after last year,” said Hernandez, a senior. “I have to give God a lot of the credit.” In the 1,600-relay Hernandez edged past and then held off Cuero’s Fabian Olguin to give Raymondville the gold medal. “Seabiscuit, I call him (Hernandez) Seabiscuit,” said Dominguez, who ran the third leg of the race. “He might not be the biggest, he might not be the strongest, but he has the biggest heart.” Heart was in abundance for the Bearkats on Saturday. In the 800-meter relay, Raymondville was leading but dropped the baton on the final leg, which basically ended any hope the Bearkats had of winning the meet.

Cuero captured the meet championship with 119.2 points. Raymondville was second with 90. Cuero and Raymondville were the dominant teams while Luling was third with 42.2 points. “Even if we hadn’t dropped the stick, Cuero would have still won the meet. They picked up points in the sprints and field events that we weren’t in,” said Raymondville coach Tony Neimeier. However, Neimeier and Raymondville athletic director Alex Leal couldn’t hide their happiness at what the Bearkats had accomplished.

What was impressive was how the Bearkats bounced back after the disappointment of the 800-meter relay. “We didn’t want that to get us down,” said Dominguez. “We knew we could come back.” That was evident in the 1,600-relay as Garza, Garcia, Dominguez and Hernandez all turned in good legs to hold off Cuero. The Gobblers and the Bearkats dueled in the sprint relay as well with Cuero winning that event in 42.45. In the 200, Alejo, a sophomore, came into the finals with the second-best qualifying time. Jacolby Williams of Aransas Pass had the top qualifying time. However, Alejo turned that around in the finals as he clocked a 22.08 to Williams’ 22.38. “I’m pretty excited,” he said.
If it was a great performance for the Bearkats, it wasn’t for the rest of the Valley teams competing in the event.

The only other Valley qualifier was Port Isabel’s Scott McGallicher, who finished second in the 100-meters (11.16). The only other medallist for the Valley was Erik Estrada of Rio Hondo, who finished third in the 800 (2:01.24). No Valley girls qualified for the state meet. Progreso’s Melinda Sarmiento, who won the regional high jump title last year and went on to finish second at the state meet, ended up fifth this year.

Andrew Hernandez, anchor for Raymondville’s 1600-meter relay team, zeros in on the finish line to win the event Saturday at the Region IV-3A track and field meet in Kingsville.

man La Vernia's girls were great, but look for Bandera to bring a completely new deal to the state meet.Im not gonna say anything specific but I know that our time will probably be dropping about 4 seconds...which should make it a hell of a race. Oh, and our second leg didnt run her best time, she actually ran two seconds slower than normal. If all goes well, we should have a 6 second difference.

yeah 4th I think...we lost two girls that really helped this year and it seems La Vernia worked really hard this off season. We only got 3rd this year at regionals but we are still gonna show up strong at state.
