Sweetwater teammates face off for state berth

MIDLAND Thursday offered conflicting emotions for Sweetwater senior Travis Henson.

Henson had just won a playoff to advance to the UIL Class 3A Boys Golf Championships in Austin in two weeks, but he was conflicted as how to feel.

The problem?

He defeated his teammate and best friend Loren Rees to earn the berth.

“It’s hard to be excited,” Henson said. “It was just kind of hard to want to win, but you don’t want your teammate to lose.”

The players tied for second place in the medalist standings at 150 and Henson birdied the first playoff hole to earn his first-ever trip to state.

“That’s pretty tough, but stuff happens,” Rees said. “It will bother me until I play again.”

Making the situation even worse for Rees and Henson was the Mustangs missed a team berth by one stroke, losing to Graham.

The Steers finished at 621, while the Mustangs were at 622.

“There’s definitely several strokes we could have gained back in our round,” Henson said.
The Mustangs missed a state berth in 2006 by a stroke as well.

“I wouldn’t want to be Sweetwater right now,” Andrews head coach Jeff Miller said. “I’ve been there before and it is tough.”

And why would you said "yeah you did read that...lol" refering to Sweetwater golf. They won state as a team my Junior year, could have my Senior year. Won 25 years ago and have been very competative within that entire span.
