Fort Stockton tries to keep tradition going in 1,600 relay
By Craig Craker
April 27, 2007 - 8:39AM
Last year the Fort Stockton Panthers were happy with a fourth-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay at the state meet.

This season they have dreams of winning it.

To accomplish those goals, the Panthers will need to have good performances today and Saturday in the Region I-3A Track and Field Championships at Ratliff Stadium.

Adrian Nevarez leads the Panthers this weekend by competing in five events while Sam Franklin is in three.

“If we qualify in both relays then we will start looking for a (team) state championship,” Franklin said.

The Panthers have an excellent chance at qualifying in the mile relay, which finished fourth with Nevarez and Franklin on it at state last season.

“It is what we work on every track season,” Nevarez said. “If you are a quarter runner you can basically run anything.”

Nevarez was the main reason the Panthers even advanced to the state meet last year, taking the baton in seventh place on his third leg and rallying his team to second place at the regional meet.

He may have to do the same this weekend, as the team has two newcomers in Desi Urias and Jonathan Pacheco.

“I don’t want to say we are cocky, but I would say we are pretty good,” Nevarez said. “I think we will turn out a pretty good race and some pretty good times.”

Nevarez will be competing in five events, including the 800-meter relay, mile relay, 400-meter dash, long jump and triple jump.

“This season has been a lot better,” Nevarez said. “More experience, better competition and I have improved my times.”

Now the Panthers will try to improve their standing in the state.

“If we qualify in both relays then we will start looking for a (team) state championship,” Franklin said.

That's a pretty bold statement! I have a feeling the 2-time defending State Champions will be hard to beat!

and who are they?

they also said, quote:

I misunderstood what you were asking - I had just read this part
“If we qualify in both relays then we will start looking for a (team) state championship,” Franklin said.

then I saw - "did they win last year" so I thought that's what you were asking.. sorry

- that's what I get for skipping around while reading posts - I would never brag on Cuero winning the Mile Relay (not with a 3:30 - I know better) - and Cuero won the 4x100 and 4x200 last year - -

Ft. Stockton has got to get out of Odessa before they start talking about winning in Austin

1600 m Relay times coming out of the Dist meets

Sanger 3:22.00
Argyle 3:23.41
Vernon 3:27
F. Stockton 3:30.75
Sweetwater 3:31.03
Graham 3:34.22
Sorry but sittin 4th in region one leaves a lot of time to make up
you can say well they have run faster or
our boys will run faster when pushed is one thing,
but you got to remember the boys from Sanger Argyle Vernon and yes even Sweetwater and Graham will also run faster when pushed
best bets
Sanger and Argyle with Vernon 3rd

Stockton jogged to a 10 second win in district, the week before they ran a 3:22:00, I think they will show up.

How do you know that Sanger and Argyle didn't jog to a 10 second dist win and runner up AND run 3:22 and 3:23.41 respectivley

They have already shown up

all i am saying is that experience (4th last year in state by a second) and good times + health + rest ( had no competition in district) should = something good.

But that's why the kids run the event on friday and saturday and not on computer screens.

I think stockton will run a 3:19 tomorrow they coasted at 3:25 today they've only ran there 4 fastest at one meet and that was west texas(FAT) and they left everyone behind i'm not a stockton fan whatsoever but i give credit where its due they'll be able to compete at state in the 4x400, but sendin the 4x200 to state is wishful thinkin but i've seen strangers things(Sanger DQ'd in the 4x100 and 4x200 today)
