After 30 minutes of deliberation Wharton ISD Superintendent Don Hillis named Gary VanSant as the new athletic director and football coach Thursday afternoon.

VanSant, 45, graduated from Edna in 1980 and received his degree at Southwest Texas State University.

He is currently the AD and football coach at Class 2A Tidehaven in El Maton.

VanSant was also the head football coach at Hallettsville and Louise.

He was an assistant coach at El Campo in the mid 1990's.

He most likely start his duties in late May after he gets released from his contract at Tidehaven.

However VanSant said he will find time to make visits to Wharton in his spare time,

"Wharton has always had a lot of potential and lot of talent," said VanSant.

I just hope that we can continue this tradition."

Van Sant was among 52 persons who applied for the job and only eight who were interviewed

Van Sant has an overall head coaching record of 23-44-3 and went 3-16 in his two seasons at Tidehaven, which hasn't had a winning season since 1999...

How Did He Get This Job???

for weeks...posters have said that wharton was going in " DIFFERENT" DIRECTION.

some of the best coaches around though have been stuck in poor , " no win" situations.

van sant might be a hard worker that just never got put in a situation where he could have success.

although he'll find himself in another tough district....and 8 teams..

well there is a big difference between Tidehaven and Wharton and if the Tigers dont have a winning season with all the talent that it has then something is wrong but we'll see what happens good luck to the tigers and the whole athletic program next season

Winning 3 games at Tidehaven in two years right now is an accomplishment.

I don't know that I would make that leap, but to each his own.
