Game 4: La Grange (R23) vs. Columbia (T24) : Game 1: 4/27 @ 5pm in Columbus; Game 2: 4/28 @ Noon; if 3rd game needed it will follow 30 minutes after game 2

Quite possibly one of the most interesting of the Region III first round playoffs; LG 2005 State Champs and WC 2006 State Champs going at it. Both with two high caliber pitchers and each team has pitchers that have won State! Great matchup.

Aransas Pass - making its fourth playoff appearance in five years - last reached the area round in 2004.

"It's a good feeling," Panthers coach Myron Marquardt said. "Coming into the playoffs, we felt this was going to be a special year for us, and we knew if we got by Gonzales we'd have an opportunity to make a good run (in the postseason)."

Aransas Pass will have its chance thanks to Adams (who also had two RBI), Monica Espinoza and Tharas, who combined for seven of the Panthers' nine hits in the game. Tharas also pitched a five-hit shutout - getting out of a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh inning to do so.

"Our whole team pulled together to make sure that (Gonzales) didn't (spoil the shutout)," said Tharas, who improved to 17-5 on the season, after she walked four, hit a batter and struck out three.

Adams' RBI double, which scored Kali Oliver, highlighted the Panthers' four-run first inning.

"We jumped on (Gonzales) early, and that was a big plus for our girls - it gave us a lot of confidence," Marquardt said.

Tharas made that lead stand, and she had plenty of defensive help. Center fielder Brittney Fuller made a diving catch on a line drive to start the bottom of the first and help set the tone for Aransas Pass defensively.

The Panthers later turned a rare 6-5-4 double play to end the fifth inning. That play started with a ground ball to shortstop Oliver, who threw to Shelby Polasek at third to record the second out of the inning. Polasek then threw to Monica Espinoza to force the runner at second base for the final out of the frame.

Tharas capped the shutout in the seventh inning by catching a base runner from Gonzales (18-12) off guard. She fielded a bunt and faked a throw to first before running down and tagging the runner to record the first out of the inning. She retired the next two on ground ball outs to end the game.

Class 3A
LYFORD 24, HIDALGO 4, 5 INNINGS: At Hidalgo, the Lyford Lady Bulldogs kicked off their playoff run by trouncing Hidalgo in five innings for their third consecutive Class 3A bi-district championship.
“It’s always good to push some runs across, and the good things is we finally got the bats going and started hitting the gaps,” Lyford coach Andy Pena said. “A lot of those were solid hits, not too many errors on their part.”
Maria Lopez hit a home run for Lyford.
ZAPATA 13, RIO HONDO 0, 5 INNINGS: At La Joya, Rio Hondo saw their season come to an end with a loss to Zapata in bi-district.
“We were kind of shaky, kind of nervous,” Rio Hondo coach Alex Rosales said. “It was the first time being there in a long time for all of the girls. We just couldn’t make the plays.”
Zapata scored four runs in the third, five in the fourth and four in the fifth to put the game away. Melissa Cruz led Rio Hondo by going 1-for-3 at the plate. The Lady Bobcats end the season at 14-10.

Lyford is 18-6 overall, i believe...

Ray - We beat AP 2-1 & then 7-1. They were the only team in our district to score a run against us and only one was earned. They have a nice mixture of youth & experience. If the lead off hitter gets on base, I'd say 8 times out of 10 she will score. They have some decent hitters. I know they have one girl who hit a couple of HRs early in the season. I don't know how she did in district. Caller.com might actually have some stats for you to check out. ;)

Should be a good match-up.

In D 22 Tarkington lost to Splendora twice 0-16 and 1-13, they split with third place Shepherd winning 5-2 and dropping the next 1-3.

Raymondville, Lyford ready for stern tests

When the 2007 softball season began, many people wanted to pencil in Raymondville and Lyford into the playoffs. While it’s never safe to assume anything, this case would’ve been an exception. Both Willacy County teams are back in the postseason, and both will face some stiff challenges in the area round beginning tonight.
Raymondville vs. Aransas Pass
The Lady Kats (19-5), fresh off their District 31-3A championship and subsequent bye, will face Aransas Pass in a onegame playoff at Texas A&M- Kingsville tonight. Raymondville coach Pedro Soria said with one of his team’s strength’s being its deep pitching staff, he wished for a three-game set. However, perhaps knowing this, Aransas Pass (20-7-1) opted for the winner-take-all contest.
That might just suit Raymondville fine, too. Soria’s club, which stands at 19-5, boasts three talented hurlers in Darlene Hernandez, April Huerta and freshman Adrianna Barron. But to beat the Lady Panthers, Soria said the Raymondville bats must get going as soon as they get off the bus.
“Basically, we’ve got to get the bats going in the beginning,” he said. “We can’t sit on them and wait until the later innings and decide to wake up.” The Lady Panthers, the runner-up in 30-3A to Sinton, like to play small ball, and Raymondville has been keying on that aspect of their defense the entire week. “They’re a bunt-and-drag team,” Soria said of Aransas Pass. “All nine girls can pretty much lay down the bunt.”
The game is a watermark of sorts for Raymondville, however, it’s one they hope to surpass. In the past two seasons, the Lady Kats have succumbed to defeat in the area round. Last year it was Crystal City, and in 2005 it was Devine.
“This looks to be the year that we could do it,” Soria said of advancing. “We’ve got a real good chance of getting out if the girls produce. They look pretty focused.” The winner of this game will face the winner of Zapata and Yoakum in the next round.
Lyford vs. Sinton
Coach Andy Peña’s Lady Bulldogs from Lyford will face a tough opponent of their own, the state-ranked Sinton Lady Pirates (29-6-1) in Game 1 tonight in Sinton. Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) will be in Lyford, which normally plays well at home. The winner of this series will take on the winner of the three-game set between La Feria and Cuero.
Lyford (18-6) comes into the area round after dismantling Hidalgo 24-4 last week in bidistrict. While the score was lopsided, Peña said his club still hit the ball well, including first-baseman Maria Lopez, who went deep. With the tough Lady Pirates on the horizon, the Lady Bulldogs have remained even keel all week. “They’re pretty upbeat, and focused,” Peña said of his club. “They know what they’re up against, but they’re not intimidated.”
“Not to take anything away from them (Sinton),” he continued. “They’re a great team. They’re not state-ranked for nothing.” What they’re up against is a Sinton team that claimed the 30-3A championship, and boasts some of the Coastal Bend’s best softball talent. The Lady Pirates enjoyed a bye last week.
But according to the thirdyear skipper, to beat Sinton, it’s not just about hittting, catching and throwing.
“To be honest, it’s not so much about them (Sinton)” he said. “If we can play our game to our fullest potential, we have a very good chance of being successful.”

RAYMONDVILLE 2, ARANSAS PASS 1: At Kingsville, the Raymondville Lady Kats wanted to get past the area round after failing the last two seasons.
Next goal, please.
The Lady Kats got good pitching from junior Darlene Hernandez and Deborah Barnhart slammed a two run double as
Raymondville advanced past area with a 2-1 win over Aransas Pass Friday night in a Class 3A area clash at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
“It was focus once again. We truly wanted it and our pitching was excellent,” said Raymondville coach Pedro Soria.
Hernandez, got a hit and went the distance for the win. Barnhart’s double came with two outs in the third and they were all Hernandez needed.
“They played their hearts out,” Soria said.
Raymondville will now face Yoakum a three-game series beginning next Thursday, with the site to be determined.

One thing of note. Wylie's Marlene Wyatt didn't allow an earned run in the playoffs. She threw 4 shutout games (losing game 2 due to an error by somebody else) and pitched 3 innings of shutout ball in Game 3. She was pulled after the 1st in Game 3 and returned in the 6th to finish the game. After the game on Friday night, she had to go to Austin to compete in the UIL Current Events Saturday morning where she was 5th as an individual and the team finished 1st. Then she drove back to Mineral Wells (250 miles each way) to get back in time for games 2 and 3. Definitely some impressive work by her.

Congrats to the Roos though for their win yesterday!

TOMBALL - When the final huddle of the season broke up, Silsbee coach Jason Morgan asked Caroline McClelland - his lone senior, the player who did anything she was told as long as it meant playing - for one more thing.

For a brief moment on the softball diamond at Tomball High School, the two Tigers shared a final hug.

Together, Morgan and McClelland had helped turn Silsbee into a postseason team over the last two seasons. But after a 7-0 loss to Sealy in the area round of the Class 3A playoffs, they were about to part ways.

"What do you say? You finish second (in District 21-3A), you go to the playoffs and you lose one kid," Morgan said. "She's important to us, but you lose one kid. The rest of these girls are going to come back, keep playing and get better. And we'll go farther than this next time."

As for this time, Sealy - ranked No. 10 in the Class 3A Texas Girls Coaches Association poll - unloaded for five extra-base hits and kept the Silsbee bats off balance all night, ending what may have been the most successful softball season ever for Silsbee (24-9-1).

The team made the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time, and Silsbee also advanced past the first round of the playoffs for the time.

But Friday night's game was often a learning experience for Silsbee and its freshman pitcher Danielle Treadway, who had two strikeouts and two walks. She and Silsbee were done in by a Sealy offense that sleepwalked through the first inning, then erupted in the second.

Cleanup hitter Ariel Gomez started the inning with a monstrous home run beyond the right-field fence. From there, Sealy capitalized on four walks, a double and a fielding error to add three more runs, forcing Silsbee to play from behind - something it hadn't done since a district loss to Hamshire-Fannett.

Sealy pitcher Sarah Holub took it from there, firing 12 strikeouts in a tidy two-hit gem.

Silsbee put two runners on base in the first inning but couldn't bring them home. After that, only one batter - sophomore Kayla Adams - got a hit off Holub, ripping a single through the middle in the fourth.

"Sarah's a four-year starter who's worked really hard for us," Sealy coach Casey Anderson said. "What's great, though, is that our bats have come around, as you saw tonight."

Sealy (21-11) scored two more runs on a Gomez triple to center field in the fourth inning, then added its final run in the sixth.

Holub retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced.

"That's a good team we just beat in Silsbee," Anderson said. "That's a young team over there, and we've got quite a few seniors starting for us. Silsbee's gonna be back, and they're gonna be better next year."

Bellville takes out Lady Cardinals, 8-1

Van Wade
The Orange Leader

TEXAS CITY — There was no "cardiac" left in the Bridge City Lady Cardinals Saturday afternoon.

The Bellville Lady Brahmas made sure of that in Game Three of the Class 3A Region III area round softball playoffs at Texas City High School's Clark Field.

Bellville jumped on the Lady Cardinals for five straight hits in the first inning and scored three runs in the frame and went on to wrap up the series with an 8-1 victory.

Bridge City senior Samantha Myers drove in the winning run in Game Two in the seventh inning to help the Lady Cardinals prolong the series with a 3-2 victory after BC dropped Game One 2-0.

However, it wasn't meant to be Saturday for the District 21-3A champion Lady Cardinals (23-5).

The Lady Brahmas' lone senior, pitcher Lauren Luetge hurled a complete-game five-hitter and struck out nine to nab the win on the hill.

Bellville (21-9), the third-place team out of rugged District 23-3A, hit the ball all over the field to start the contest and finished with 13 hits.

"To put it plain and simple, they (Bellville) hit the ball well today and we didn't," said first-year Lady Cardinal head coach Sophia Mount. "They came straight out and got about five hits and we never countered that. Give Bellville lots of credit, they have an excellent team. So do we and our kids still have a lot be proud of."

Leadoff hitter Lindsay Patek, who was 2-for-4, had a single up the middle off BC starter Shandi Conner and Courtney Peschel followed with a single to right. Callie Yantis the ripped a shot to leftfield that Lady Cardinal Sarah Armand almost made a great play on as the ball fell just beyond her grasp as Patek darted in for the first run. Luetge, who was 2-for-4, made it 2-0 with an RBI single up the middle and an Alyssa Murphy, who was 3-for-4, single up the middle brought home Yantis for a 3-0 Lady Brahma cushion.

Brittany DeRouen promptly replaced Conner on the mound for BC and pitched the next four innings before Conner re-entered in the fifth frame.

Four big hits led to four more Bellville runs and a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Patek had a one-out single to left. Peschel hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Patek out at second. Yantis then had an infield single and Luetge singled up the middle to load the bases. That set up a monstrous three-run triple by Murphy, who sent a ball all the way to the wall in centerfield.

Bellville made it 8-0 in the sixth.

Yantis had a leadoff triple to right-center and eventually scored on a passed ball.

The Lady Cardinals showed plenty of fight in the top of the seventh to snag their lone run of the contest.

Myers, who was 2-for-3, sliced a bloop single to right and later scored when Valerie Brown crushed a Luetge offering with a run-scoring triple to dead center.

"Our kids scrapped to the very end, it just wasn't meant to be,"Mount said. "We're losing such a great group of seniors that gave it their all. We've got a strong group coming back and from what I hear a good young group coming up the ranks. This program still has plenty of great softball ahead of it."

The Lady Cardinals will get a chance next season to continue a 75-game District 21-3A winning streak.

Other hits for BC included a single in the first inning by Jenna Angelle, a single by Christina Jaques in the third frame and another Myers single in the fourth.

BC left four runners on base while the Lady Brahmas stranded nine.

DeRouen worked four innings, allowing six hits while striking out three and walking one. Conner allowed seven hits in two frams, striking out two and walking one.

Bellville will now head on to face District 23-3A champion and rival Giddings in the 3A Region III quarterfinals next week.

"Bellville has a superb team and hopefully they'll move on," Mount said. "Their district was amazing all season and always is. That'll be a great matchup."

Game: 1

Yoakum 10 Raymondville 0 in 6 innings

The 4th was the killer in our game...after a tight first 3 innings the Lady Kats made a million mistakes in the 4th to give Yoakum a 9-0 lead. We just couldn't get the bats going...hope we get some better luck on Saturday.

YOAKUM 10, RAYMONDVILLE 0, 6 INNINGS: At Calallen, a series of errors by the Raymondville Lady Kat defense combined with some hot bats displayed by Yoakum enabled the Lady Bulldogs to pull out the win.
Yoakum (29-5) leads this Region IV-3A best-of-three series 1-0. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Calallen.
“We had one bad inning,” Raymondville coach Pedro Soria said. “And we knew Yoakum had some good sticks. All nine of their girls can hit the ball.”
In addition, the Lady Kats (20-6), who started off well before the miscues, just could not string together any hits of their own.
Nonetheless, Soria said the club remains optimistic heading into Game 2.
