Does anyone know of any way to tell who qualified?

I plan on going, but I have no idea if anyone from Greenwood even qualified.

The Midland Reporter Telegram sure isn't going to report anything!!

7-3A speedsters aim for Austin

By Evan Ren / rene@reporternews.com
April 22, 2007

There won't be any lack of speed at the upcoming Class 3A Region I track meet, and much of it will come right out of Abilene's backyard - from District 7-3A.

Wylie's Gary Edwards, Sweetwater's Skye Green and Comanche's Michael Byrd will be among the favorites in this week's competition, which gets underway Friday at Odessa's Ratliff Stadium.

The meet headlines a trio of 3A Region I events this week in Odessa; Golf begins Monday for girls and Tuesday for boys at the Nueva Vista Golf Club. Tennis will be played at the Ector County ISD Courts, beginning on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

''I think our district will represent Region I very well,'' Sweetwater coach Patrick Villa said. ''Wylie has been deep and I think they'll do a great job, we've got (Green) and we've been strong in the relays and Comanche has Byrd.''

Edwards, who finished fourth in the state a year ago is the odds-on favorite in the 200, having posted a personal-best time of 21.25.

Green, however, may be the fastest athlete in the meet. Recently signed by Texas Tech, Green placed third in the state as a junior in the 100, finishing in 10.58. But defending state champion Shawnbrey McNeal from Dallas Madison returns, possibly setting the stage for a huge showdown in Austin.

''In pure sprints, I think our district is probably one of the strongest in state,'' Comanche coach Stacey Martin said. ''Third place from our district will have faster times than some kids at state.''

In Byrd, Martin has the sixth-place finisher in the 400 in last year's state meet, who has posted a personal best of 49.7.

Currently being pursued by UT-Arlington and UT-San Antonio, Byrd is also considered a contender for the state meet in the 200, but will likely need to eclipse his personal best of 21.75 in order to achieve that.

''I think you should see quite a few sprinters from our area going to Austin,'' Wylie coach Eddie Lang said. ''I think Edwards should win the 200, Green should win the 100 and Byrd should win the 400.''

On the girls side, athletes to keep an eye on include Edwards' little sister, Bessie, who qualified for state a year ago in the 200, but was unable to compete after becoming dehydrated. She has covered the 200 meters with a PR of 25.14.

Clyde sophomore Emily Yates is another, having qualified for the regional in the long jump, triple jump, the 100 and the 200.
