RAYMONDVILLE — The Raymondville Lady Kats said the second game against Lyford would be different. They were right. Riding a three-headed pitching machine, the Lady Kats had a big fourth inning to take care of the offense, beating neighboring Lyford 9-6 Friday night to claim the District 31-3A championship.

Pitchers Adrianna Barron, April Huerta and Darlene Hernandez each made an appearance for Raymondville in the center circle. The win gives Raymondville five consecutive league titles, including last year’s co-championship with Lyford, which settles for runner-up this year. It also avenges a 12-2 loss to the Lady Bulldogs on March 27.

“It feels great,” said first-year Raymondville coach Pedro Soria. “When your three pitchers deep, it makes it easier and I used them all tonight.” Raymondville (7-1 district 19-5 overall) showed poise against their rivals, overcoming an early 3-0 defecit and a late Lyford rally. The Lady Bulldogs (6-2, 17-6) hung tough despite an unusually-rough outing from starting pitcher Petie Guerra.

“They were the better team tonight, and they’re the better team in the district, bottom line,” Lyford head coach Andy Peña said. “My hat’s off to coach Soria and his bunch. They did a great job.” Things started out fine for Lyford in the first. Lexi Lopez reached on an error and Amaris Hernandez (1-for-1, three intentional walks) singled to start the threat. Back-to-back doubles by Maria Lopez and Guerra made it 3-0 Lyford.

But like champions do, Raymondville fought back in the second. Jessica Munguia (2-for-2) was hit by a pitch and Jamie Durbin (2-for-3) singled to score Munguia. Durbin later came home to close it to 3-2.

Then the Lady Kats just poured it on in the fourth. A five-run explosion was keyed by consecutive singles by Munguia and Durbin. Barron reached on an error to score Munguia to tie it. Then Durbin scored on a wild pitch to put the home team ahead 4-3 with one out. Then it got worse for Lyford’s Guerra. Liz Alvarez hit a Texas Leaguer and Guerra then plunked two straight batters to load the bases for Deborah Barnhart. Barnhart calmly slammed a bases-clearing double to make it 7-3. Huerta came in for Raymondville in the fifth and allowed a walk before getting three quick outs. But Lyford fought back with three runs against reliever Hernandez in the sixth.

Sonya Lerma (walk), Jackie Esparza (walk) and Anyssa Romo (error) all scored to close it to 7-6. Hernandez was intentionally walked for the third time and advanced to second, still with two away as the surge continued. But a close call went against Lyford, as Hernandez was called out for runner’s interference on her way to third to kill the rally and end the inning.

“These girls never give up and they always go down swinging,” Peña said of the rally. “They’ve showed a lot of character all year and this time they just came up short.” Raymondville then got two insurance runs against Guerra and it was all they needed for Barron, who came back in the game in the seventh and finished it off.

“In the last two weeks, the focus, the intensity of the practices was there,” Soria said. “They closed it in 7-6 and we got those two insurance runs and we closed it up.” The win gives Raymondville a bye in the first round of the postseason and ensures another area round appearance. Lyford is looking at a probable matchup with Hidalgo in bi-district, with time and date to be announced.
