Rangers 2B Kinsler named AL Player of Week

April 16, 2007
NEW YORK (TICKER) -- Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday.

After hitting 14 home runs and collecting 55 RBI in his rookie season last year, the 24-year-old Kinsler has been one of the AL's top sluggers so far this season.

Although the Rangers went just 3-3 during the week, Kinsler hit .476 (10-for-21) with four home runs, eight RBI and seven runs scored.

Kinsler homered in three consecutive games from April 10-13, including a 2-for-3 effort in a 5-2 win at the Seattle Mariners last Friday where he drove in two runs for the third time in four games.

Overall, Kinsler ranks second in the majors with a .886 slugging percentage and is tied for second with six homers.

Other candidates for the award were Toronto infielder Aaron Hill and outfielder Alex Rios, Tampa Bay's Ty Wigginton and Cleveland starter C.C. Sabathia.
