Isn't that the same weekend as the Softball Championships? Maybe some people going to the Softball games can make it over to Burnet.

That's what I was thinking is to take 35 to Hwy 29 in Georgetown....

I've heard the more scenic route is to take 281 down from Brownwood....but that's like a 5 hour trip

Take the more scenic route. Head down 281. It goes right thru Burnet.

So you think speeding is gonna save gas? Hwy 281 has a speed limit of 70, same as I-35. The difference is 281 is scenic and 35 isn't.

281 is the more scenic route. It doesn't take 5 hours though to go that way and you'll enjoy going that way a lot more. You'll wind up going through my hometown right before you get to Burnet. Some good times competing against the Bulldogs (and the Lake Rats down in Marble Falls) many years ago.

Number 6 on the directions is where the road ends for me whenever I get the chance to go back home and visit my family. The Hill Country has so much more scenery than this barren landscape up here in the Metroplex.

Sounds good Matthew. You drive a pickup now, and if it's any color but pink, you should be able to get right into Burnet. Even if it was pink, all you gotta do is when the deputy stops you at the city limits, just roll down the window and hand him an empty LSLN and ask him to dispose of it for you. He'll take it, grin, and wave you right on by.:D If not, just tell him you know Chris Hart personally.;)

Lampasas. (Or if you hail from Gatesville it's spelled Lampus-a**)

Most folks who have asked me where I'm from have never heard of the place unless I mention to them that it's the hometown of Johnny "Lam" Jones.

I would avoid I-35 if possible. Chances are very great to getting stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic going 25 mph from Waco past Temple or even Georgetown. And I know from experience (lhpd didn't listen to me :D ;) ), the access roads aren't a good alternative.

There is only 1 thing good about I-35. It's when your on it and you see Oklahoma in your rear view mirror :D

Well since my plan will be to leave Saturday morning at 5am I doubt traffic will be an issue heading down....plus on my way down since I'll be up really early I'd like to get as much sleep as possible and take the quickest way....which looks like 35..

On my way back Sunday I may decide on the scenic route....in fact I probably will...I have heard 281 is one the most beautiful drives around...

I'll actually get my fill of 281 in June.....I guess June 3 I can go 281 from Burnet to Brownwood...then on June 23 I'll be in Brownwood covering their SQT and I can take 281 from Brownwood up to Wichita Falls since I have Oil Bowl Coverage that night!

Just a quick note, 281 doesn't go to Brownwood.

Might be the Country Kitchen. They have pretty good food and it doesn't cost too much from what I remember. Used to go there a lot on the weekends as a child with my grandmother to eat donuts and drink coke while she got caught up on all the town's gossip with her friends.lol...

Yes they did. Lampasas is the intersection for 281, 183 and 190. I rememeber so many out of town folks trying to figure out where to go when you get to where they all intersect.

Ahhhhh so from Burnet I'd take 281 up to Lampasas then hit 183 which I know goes to Brownwood right??

So then on June 23 I would take 377 from Brownwood up to Stephenville then get on 281 to Wichita Falls

Sounds right. Take a left on the northside of Lampasas by the showbarn and go through Lometa and Goldthwaite and then go left once you go through Goldthwaite. You'll go through Mullin and Zephyr (Sports Illustrated did a story on their 6 man team back in the mid-90's and took a picture of the team in front of that general store they have right by the highway.) and it'll take you to Brownwood from there.

Looking at a map I think what I'll do heading back is start in Marble Falls and just take 281 all the way up to Stephenville and then hit 377 to 820 in Fort Worth....I've never been through Marble Falls and everyone says its just beautiful....

I just need now to get the quickest route from Round Rock (where I'll be lodging) to Marble Falls!

From RR, FM 1431 will take you to Marble Falls.

I believe 1431 is the road I take to get to RRISD Athletic Complex...from Fort Worth take I-35 to 1431 make a left (west) go down to Parmer and hook a left.....isn't Westinghouse Rd the exit before 1431?

1431...lol...Can't count the amount of drunken late night trips down that road in high school. We'd get a designated driver and take my t-top Camaro down that roller coaster of a road and go down into Austin to eat at Jim's at 3 or 4 in the morning.

My memories of the Country kitchen were that the food was ok but nothing special and the last few times that we stopped there on the way to the deer lease the service was really terrible. There was this old waitress that had probably been there for years and fancied herself a character. She acted pissed off and salty the whole time we were there. I decided to never go back, and to leave her no tip.

Yes, 1431 is what you'd take to The Palace, but west would be a right off I-35. ;) I believe Westinghouse is the one before 1431. Try to avoid all the construction in the new toll road area (I-35, 620, Parmer & 183 areas to past 1431).

The prettiest area of 281 is from just South of Marble Falls to Burnet. Nice drive. Just before you get to Burnet from Marble Falls take a left on the road to the park and check out the castle there. It's not far from 281 and if you have a few minutes to spare, it's worth it.:)

After making the trip from Burnet to Fort Worth and back to Burnet just about every week for 3 1/2 years, I got to where I would avoid IH 35 at all cost. My chosen route was to take I35W, south out of Fort Worth to HWY 67 at Alvarado, then west on 67 around Cleburn to Glen Rose. From Glen Rose continue west on Hwy 67 approximatly 12 miles to Hwy 220 which branches off 67 to the South (if you miss 220 you end up in Stephenville), Continue south on Hwy 220 until it dead ends into Hwy 6 in Hico, take a right and continue a short distance to Hwy. 281, turn left and head for Burnet. Pull out your map and check it out. Good highways all the way. Two lanes part of the way, but pleanty of places to pass.

If I left Fort Worth before rush hour it usually took me about 3 hours to make it to Burnet. Watch for the Hwy Patrol just north of Lampasas and between Lampasas and Burnet.

Be safe and have a great trip!:)

That would be Hwy 1431. It is a beautiful route, but be careful, it is also known as one of the most dangerous strips of highway in Central Texas.

If you plan to eat in Marble Falls, The Bluebonnet Cafe is a really exceptional place to eat.

1431 is easily the most dangerous strip of highway in Texas. I honestly can't believe they leave that thing open without giving it a major overhaul.

Several sections of 1431 are in the mill to improve, but the Burnet TxDOT office can't pry any money away from the massive rebuilding jobs in Austin. 1431 from US 183 at Cedar Park to US 281 in Marble Falls is a very dangerous road! Only section that has any improvements is at Smithwick.

yeah but 281 you have to stop going through all the towns. Stopping and going uses more gas doesnt it? I am an interstate type of guy. Let me drive and get to my destination. I dont want to drive through 5767567 little towns and stop at the single traffic light in town or get behind farmer Brown on his tractor goign to the cafe for his afternoon coffee.

HWY 281 is mostly a 4 lane hwy. Not many towns to slow down thru either. Stopping at one or 2 traffic lights compared to driving 80 mph, you'd save gas stopping at the lights.
