Wylie baseball

After being no-hit for four innings, the Wylie baseball team erupted for 11 runs in the fifth and turned a 2-0 deficit into a 12-2 run-ruling of visiting Breckenridge on Friday to remain unbeaten in District 7-3A.

The Bulldogs (21-1-1, 6-0), No. 2 in the most recent Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 3A state rankings, have now won their six district games by a combined score of 81-13.

Wylie was stymied from the start by Breckenridge starter Brooks McClanahan, but Bulldogs pitcher Cory Davis matched him with a no-hitter of his own until the Buckaroos (10-10, 3-3) broke through for two runs in the fourth.

The lead - and the McClanahan no-no - didn't last much longer. Wylie's first run came on an RBI double by Greg Johnson, then Johnson scored on a single by Chance Bragg to tie it. The runs kept on coming from there, highlighted by a bases-loaded triple by Nathan Saltzgaber. A 12th run by Wylie in the sixth ended it.

Davis allowed only four hits in six innings.

''He has pitched well in every outing, and he really did what he had to do to keep us in the game,'' Wylie coach Clay Martin said of Davis. ''It was a good deal on the mound and a great deal that the kids responded in the fifth to get back rolling.''

The Bulldogs are idle on Tuesday before playing at Comanche on April 20.

Wylie 12, Breckenridge 2 (6)

Breckenridge 000 200-2 4 2

Wylie 000 0(11)1-12 7 1

Brooks McClanahan, Jackie Cooper (5) and Kelby Roberts. Cory Davis and Martin Burleson. W - Davis (8-0). L - McClanahan. 2B - Breckenridge: Jacob Spencer; Wylie: Cory Davis 2, Greg Johnson. 3B - Wylie: Nathan Saltzgaber.

Records - Breckenridge 10-10, 3-3. Wylie 21-1-1, 6-0.

I hope playing in a weak district doesnt hurt Wylie in the playoffs.

I agree but Wylie usually fares well in the playoffs. They play a pretty solid pre district schedule.

I know the tie came at the Sweetwater tourney when Wylie squandered a 5 run lead in the bottom of the 7th on 4 errors.

Pretty impressive to win two over 5A Cooper. Couple of undefeated tourneys as well. Look like they are the team to beat in West Texas.

IMO....Wylie, Snyder, and Andrews are definitely the teams to beat in Region 1. Canyon, Lubbock Cooper and Perryton are there as well. Wylie, except for their win against 5A Cooper, hasn't had a real tough schedule. They're playing in a very weak district. Snyder is a good team, but their struggles, both offensive and deffensive, worry me at times. The playoffs will be exciting. The tops teams in Region 1 are stiff competition.

Watch out for Decatur as well. They are marching through their district. Record of 15-8 is deceiving when you see that all their losses are to 4A, 5A, and private schools. They haven't been beaten by a 3A team yet.
