Wylie baseball
After being no-hit for four innings, the Wylie baseball team erupted for 11 runs in the fifth and turned a 2-0 deficit into a 12-2 run-ruling of visiting Breckenridge on Friday to remain unbeaten in District 7-3A.
The Bulldogs (21-1-1, 6-0), No. 2 in the most recent Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 3A state rankings, have now won their six district games by a combined score of 81-13.
Wylie was stymied from the start by Breckenridge starter Brooks McClanahan, but Bulldogs pitcher Cory Davis matched him with a no-hitter of his own until the Buckaroos (10-10, 3-3) broke through for two runs in the fourth.
The lead - and the McClanahan no-no - didn't last much longer. Wylie's first run came on an RBI double by Greg Johnson, then Johnson scored on a single by Chance Bragg to tie it. The runs kept on coming from there, highlighted by a bases-loaded triple by Nathan Saltzgaber. A 12th run by Wylie in the sixth ended it.
Davis allowed only four hits in six innings.
''He has pitched well in every outing, and he really did what he had to do to keep us in the game,'' Wylie coach Clay Martin said of Davis. ''It was a good deal on the mound and a great deal that the kids responded in the fifth to get back rolling.''
The Bulldogs are idle on Tuesday before playing at Comanche on April 20.
