The following was in the NY Post this week. Anybody else make the news in the BIG APPLE this week?

New York Post July 21, 2003

WEIRD BUT TRUE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

July 21, 2003 -- The Big Apple's fashion-conscious kids wouldn't last a day in Cameron, Texas, where the school board has just passed an ultraconservative dress code.
Among the new no-nos: no visible body piercings except for girls' earrings, no skirts above the knee, no sideburns below the earlobe, no G-strings peaking out of jeans, no cleavage, no sagging pants or clothing that is torn or ripped, and no bare midriffs.

Add all shirts tucked in and no hair past the ears to the list and that's how I went through high school...

That's pretty much always been Greenwood's dress code. The skirts can be 4 inches above the knee. Boys hair must be cut above ears and off of collar. No visible body piercings (girls ears OK) no, visible tatoos, no sagging, shirts with tails must be tucked in. Hair must be clean and combed. Hair syles with "shock value" are not allowed ie: mohawks, etc. Hair color must be of a "natural color". (No purple or blue). No tank tops, no "belly shirts", no flip-flops, no pajama pants, no windshorts, no spandex shorts!!

Kids absolutely HATE IT!!!! HAHAHAHAHA :D :D

Who can't wear flip flops to school? In Burnet we arn't allowed to but people do anyway, some people get in trouble but others don't!

No flip-flops here either... It's a very strict dress-code... No color-code or anything...

BTW, we did make it on the NYC news...

Our Choir sang at Carnegy (Spelling?) Hall somewhere during the 2001-2002 school year... They got a pretty good crowd...

"Hate" is a very strong word. Take it easy 3afan2k3. You should try not to hate anybody. You can disagree with them, you can even dislike them, but don't hate. wink

I agree, Gobbla. She is one of my favorites. One of the few I will actively seek out to read. wink

I could hate someone. Saddam Hussein, for instance, if I lived over there and he had hurt me or someone I cared about.

Was this a newly implemented dress code or been in effect for many years? If so it must have been implemented by people who were product of the 60s and 70s and if so it is strange that they would implement a dress code if those of you who lived during those years know what I mean (and you should). And take it easy on 3A. I don't think he really hates anyone - he just hates the dress code and is frustrated.

This is a new dress code. The old one was more flexible but it was not being followed. The girls wore shorts that didn't cover all of their back side and sleeveless shirts that showed a lot more than was necessary.

I talked with the high school principle today and he said that the dress code is not as strict as he had asked for. He wanted belts and all shirts to be tucked in among other things.

This is one of several responses to complaint from parents about several serious problems in the school district.
