Here is a baseball story from Sweetwaters last game.

Mustangs knock off Snyder

Sweetwater head baseball coach Connie Cochran said his team's inability to come up with a two-out hit at Merkel was a key factor in the Mustangs' first district loss this past Tuesday.

But a pair of two-out hits proved to be the deciding blows for Sweetwater in Friday's District 3-3A showdown against first-place Snyder at Newman Park.

Those hits were a three-run homer by freshman Kendal Carrillo which gave the Mustangs an early 3-1 lead, and a two-run blast by senior Bubba Moncada which provided some late insurance in a 7-4 Sweetwater victory.

Mychal Carrillo also provided a two-run single in the fourth inning for Sweetwater, which improved to 3-1 in district and 14-6 overall and pulled within a half-game of the first-place Tigers (4-1, 12-9).

Sweetwater will try to catch up with Snyder when it returns to Newman Park for a doubleheader against last-place Denver City this Tuesday. The twinbill begins at 4 p.m. Sweetwater and Denver City are playing twice to make up for their earlier game at Denver City on March 21, which was cancelled due to bad weather.

Kendal Carrillo's home run put Sweetwater ahead to stay after Snyder had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Mustang ace Reid Bishop on a solo homer by Chance Greenwood.

Bishop -- who scattered eight hits and struck out three, while allowing only one earned run and one walk -- was pretty much in control after that as he improved to 3-0 this season.

But he had to battle his nerves on more than one occasion, and the Tigers were on the verge of pulling off a major comeback in the seventh after Moncada's blast had given the Mustangs a 7-2 lead in the top of the inning.

Snyder pulled within 7-4 on three singles, a throwing error, a hit batter and Greenwood's RBI ground ball. That brought the tying run to the plate in the form of designated hitter Isaac Ramon, but Bishop retired him on a flyball to center field to end the game.

"Reid's just got a stiff ol' neck," Cochran said. "He'll go out there and give it everything he's got and compete.

"It was a big ballgame for us tonight. To play well against Snyder after the loss Tuesday night was a big boost."

The Mustangs finished with 10 hits in the game and got production throughout their lineup against the Tigers, as every starter reached base at least once. Kendal Carrillo's homer came after walks to Mychal Carrillo and Bishop, and Moncada's homer followed a single by Garrett Ferguson.

Mychal Carrillo's bases-loaded single in the fifth scored Jack Squires and Randyn Tenery, and chased Snyder starter Logan Hill.
