FLOWERY BRANCH, GEORGIA (TICKER) -- Joey Harrington will settle for being Michael Vick's backup.

A little more than a month after being released by the Miami Dolphins, Harrington signed with the Atlanta Falcons on Monday.

Terms were not disclosed.

Atlanta had been seeking an experienced backup quarterback since trading Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans last month for draft picks.

Recently signed Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley, a seventh-round pick in 2006, are the other quarterbacks on Atlanta's roster.

Harrington, 28, was waived by the Miami Dolphins on March 6 after starting 11 games for them in 2006. He completed 58 percent of his passes for 2,236 yards and 12 touchdowns with 15 interceptions for a quarterback rating of 68.2

The third overall pick in the 2002 draft, Harrington spent his first four seasons with the Detroit Lions and compiled an 18-37 record as a starter. He threw for 10,242 yards and 60 touchdowns with 62 interceptions for a passer rating of 68.1

The Falcons on Monday also released cornerback Kevin Mathis, who was limited to eight games last season due to a neck injury.

Mathis, who turns 33 years old later this month, started 54 of 115 games in his 10-year career.
