Baylor extends Mulkey's contract for 10 years

Texas made Gail Goestenkors the highest paid women's basketball in the Big 12 on Thursday morning. By nightfall, she had already slipped to No. 2.

The Baylor Board of Regents approved an eye-popping new contract for Kim Mulkey late Thursday. She has agreed to a 10-year deal worth more than $10 million. It's an unprecedented pact from a school desperate to keep the person who put the Lady Bears on the map by winning the 2005 national title.

"It's a good feeling as a coach to have a good sense of security," Mulkey said. "The way it looks now, I'll spend the rest of my career at Baylor. Not many coaches have that security."

Mulkey is 183-53 in seven seasons at Baylor. She's guided the Lady Bears to six NCAA Tournament appearances. During the 2002-03 season, Baylor reached the WNIT finals.

Goestenkors agreed to a seven-year deal worth $1 million annually on Thursday with the Longhorns. She could make another $270,000 in incentives.

Mulkey's deal would be worth more than that, according to a Baylor athletic department source. While her total compensation package is worth more than $1 million, Mulkey is not expected to surpass Tennessee's Pat Summitt, who leads the nation at $1.125 million.

"Don't let anybody tell you that you can't win at the highest level at Baylor University," Mulkey said. "It's been proven, and there's no reason it can't be done. It takes the right administration, the right resources and the right coaches."

she makes less than morriss and more than drew...drew hasnt earned anything yet so y should she make more than him and morriss is football so obviously he will make more....

we arent paying dearly for anything other than we have a coach that can actually produce teams that can win the big 12 and on teh national scene....u r the first person i ever heard say we won it in a down year for women's bball as well, we were the first team to go through 3 number 1 seeds to win the championship as well....the woman can coach and i would be surprised if she didnt win another championship in her career esp. with the recruiting classes she brings in to waco.....

also this shows baylor is willing to pay good money for a top knotch coach no matter what sport in order to make sure they stay...no need to to bash baylor for putting the money into what is one of their more sucessful sports....

i didnt say she was going to UT....to say that she will never win another national championship might be wrong as well, we will see and to try to discount it by saying it was a down year is just as wrong....

baylor thought she might
THOUGHT is the 600k word
thats why she got the 10 yr 1 mill per contract
she should send some to Jody

the media fueled this badly
as soon as the tu job came open
paper-radio said she was in on it

i dont think she was
but she let the fire build
no denials
tu never really (if) contacted her
but she never said they didnt

she was making 405k
all it was was speculation
that got her 600k more

she has done well at baylor
probably better than anyone could
she should stay there
she is the big fish in a very small pond (baylor)

im just saying the pay raise was all smoke and mirrors
it cost the baptist a lot

and for what?

the same as they had

she was going no where
not LSU ethier

only reports that she would leave were from Waco
not BR-Austin-ESPN any where else
the waco media fueled it
to make baylor look better
like they had THE coach everyone wanted
thats what cost BU

the Baptist better Pass the plates more

good job Waco Trib- 1660 Espn radio
and the other media outlets

neither was donavan at uf

the aggotts lost out
it says a lot

no amount of money can make you think
you can win at BCS

KU bleeds BBall

he might have a chance there

at BCS he would win
but its way easier to recruit at KU
b ball anyway

and thats the difference

like it of not
its the truth

couple things....Mulkey was actualy making more than 800 grand a year before the raise, she got a raise after the title and there is no way u know the exact amount since we are a private school and we dont disclose that info but it was widely known she was already paid in the top 5 of women's coaches, now she is top 3....and Waco wasnt the only place talkin about Mulkey leaving, i remember an article in the DMN that pissed the baylor fans off that said she should leave for Texas, there were several articles in the Louisiana papers speculating and the Florida papers...i think even teh Houston Chronicle got in on the act, it was speculation but as they say where there is smoke there is normally fire....my guess is she was already paid more than they wanted to give so they didnt make an offer, which our AD knew since they have to talk to him first before going after a coach....maybe baylor saw this as an opportunity to keep her for the rest of her career and went after it.....
