CLEVELAND -- The Phoenix Mercury selected Lindsey Harding with the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft on Wednesday, then traded her rights to the Minnesota Lynx for Tangela Smith.

The deal was one of two big-name trades early in the first round of the draft. The New York Liberty, after drafting Tiffany Jackson from Texas, dealt guard Becky Hammond and the second-round pick in 2008 to San Antonio for Jessica Davenport, and the first-round pick in 2008.

Davenport was the No. 2 pick, followed by Mississippi's Armintie Price, who went third to the Chicago Sky. UCLA's Noelle Quinn went fourth to the Lynx.

The Washington Mystics picked Bernice Mosby with the No. 6 pick, followed by the Seattle Storm taking Katie Geralds from Purdue.

Rounding out the top 10 were Ashley Shields of Southwest Tennessee CC, who went eighth to the Houston Comets; No. 9 pick Allison Bales of Duke, taken by the Indiana Fever; and Carla Thomas of vanderbilt, who was selected by Chicago.

An ACC player of the year and two-time ACC defensive player of the year, Harding averaged 13.8 points and 4.0 rebounds for Duke last season. Her two misses from the foul line with 0.1 seconds remaining allowed Rutgers to upset the top-seeded Blue Devils 53-52 in the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament.

The Mercury became the first team in the 11-year history of the draft to get the top pick with the smallest odds of winning. They had just 25 chances out of 1,000 to get the No. 1 selection.
