"I'm going to be the highest paid elementary school P.E. teacher in the state," Boettcher said Monday from his lawyer's office. He said his salary of $68,800 will not be affected by his reassignment.
The change comes on the heels of a 33-7 season that earned Boettcher recognition as the Central Texas basketball coach of the year. He said he plans to appeal Monday's decision by Marble Falls schools superintendent Ryder Warren.
"This doesn't pass the smell test to me," said Boettcher, whose Lady Mustangs have reached the state playoffs five straight years. "I believe there is professional jealousy that our program is winning and others (at the school) are not winning."
Warren declined to be specific about the reason for Boettcher's demotion.
"Our No. 1 coaching requirement is that we put the kids above everything else," Warren said. When pressed to be more specific, the superintendent said, "It is not my right to do so."
Boettcher said he was told this demotion stemmed from issues relating to his staff.
"The official reason they gave me is that I lost control of my assistant coaches," Boettcher said.
His lawyer, Eddie Shell, described the superintendent's decision as "a crock." Shell's daughter, Morgan, was the team's leading scorer this season and earned a spot on the American-Statesman's All-Central Texas team.
"Do you think (Warren) ever considered how this might affect Morgan Shell?" the lawyer said. "This is going to tear the team apart. The program next year will be a shadow of what it was this year."
If Boettcher, a coach for 26 years, is unsuccessful in the appeals process, he said he's ready to go to court to fight for his job.
"(Warren) is not living on this planet if he doesn't concede there will be a lawsuit coming," Eddie Shell said.
Boettcher said he was escorted out of his office Monday and told he cannot have any contact with his players.
Boettcher became Marble Falls' coach in 1998 after a successful tenure at Krum High School.
