I have heard that this skit was what got them on their way to fame. I heard that they wrote it themselves and that the radio executives nixed it on the night they wanted to do it and had something else that Abbott and Costello didn't like. They were on live radio and when it came time to perform they performed the Who's on First skit much to the anger of the executives until phone calls and praise came from around the county with many people wanting to hear it agains and request from those who didn't. They were on their way to fame.
