COLLEGE STATION — At the end of another bizarre day in Texas A&M's quest to lock down basketball coach Billy Gillispie, school officials delayed an announcement of a new contract agreement after receiving indications from Gillispie that he wants to keep open his options for the most tantalizing of current job openings — Kentucky.

According to sources close to the situation, Gillispie late in the day balked at verbally agreeing to a new contract placed before the A&M board of regents for approval on Thursday. Under the new contract, Gillispie's base salary would jump from $1.25 million to around $1.6 million per year.

The school had hoped to announce the new deal Thursday afternoon and put to rest nearly a week of speculation about Gillispie's intentions to stay at A&M.

The day's maneuverings kept the uncertainty alive for A&M fans, but brought a week of drama at Arkansas to an end.

According to reports, the Razorbacks elected to drop pursuit of Gillispie after being informed by athletic director Bill Byrne around noon on Thursday that Gillispie, who is in Atlanta for the Final Four, was accepting the new contract offer at A&M and was staying put.

Curiously, according to reports, Byrne contacted Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles around 10 a.m. on Thursday to grant his permission for the Razorbacks to talk to Gillispie.

Following the A&M regents meeting, A&M officials prepared a statement to acknowledge the new contract and announce Gillispie's acceptance of the deal. Around 7 p.m., the announcement plans were scrapped.

It was clear when Erin Andrews interviewed him in Atlanta tonight that a deal with A&M was not done.

The Board of Regents doesn't vote on the contract until tomorrow. Gillispie is in Atlanta for the weekend. Don't expect anything but speculation until next week. Earlier this week, Gillispie was supposedly a done deal to Arkansas. Then he was for sure staying. Now he's looking to leave again. All you have is a bunch of sports writers trying to break a story with no concrete information because the pertinent parties aren't talking.

Gillispie talked tonight. He said a deal wasn't done, but it should be tonight or tommorow. Then he talked about the bright future at A&M.

They don't even vote to make it official untill Friday(today), he is in Atlanta and a press conference without him there would be kind of wierd.

dont know why Kentucky would want him. His team only got up for big games all season and they lost most of those and they were absolutely unprepared for the USC game.

They weren't unprepared against USC. Augustin couldn't hit a shot (didn't score until late) and he was relying on his jumper instead of driving to the basket trying to draw fouls. The Horns had a case of "Mavs in the NBA Finals" against the Trojans.

Augustin had trouble when USC put a 6'4" physical guard on him & basically shut him down (more turnovers/fouls than points/assists). They also played a 3-2 zone & cut off penetration, daring Texas to beat them from outside (Durant & Abrams got their points & little from anyone else). Barnes is not going anywhere.

BCG is just negotiating a little bit, & who can blame him? Plus maybe he works a couple more interviews with Erin Andrews out of the deal, & who can blame him for that too? Get what you deserve BCG & the future looks bright in Aggieland.

USC also got smart by not trying to stop Durant, but instead clamping down on the other 4 on the floor. USC was a match-up nightmare for Texas because of the length they possesed in the backcourt. They were able to fill the driving lanes and that forced Texas into what they are not good at, being a halfcourt team.

May be doing this to get an entising offer from kentucky that will beat A&M which will cause A&M to increase there offer to make more money. Have them in an auction so to say.

I don't see Bill Byrne getting into a bidding war with anyone. He will make his offer & see what happens (offer is out there already). If BCG leaves it will be to Kentucky, & I don't think it reaches that point.
