Bearkats shine at Edinburg

EDINBURG

— The Raymondville boys track & field team could have easily competed in this weekend’s mostly-Class 3A meet at Progreso and dominated the competition, but the Bearkats choose the tougher path.
Looking for a challenge before the Meet of Champions and the District 31-3A meet, Raymondville opted for the highly competitive and mostly-Class 5A Cats Relays on Saturday at Cats Stadium in Edinburg, and won the team competition.
“There were some really good teams out here that we thought it would get us ready for district,” said Bearkats coach Tony Niemier, whose squad was the only Class 3A team in the meet. “There was some really stiff competition. Edinburg North is always good, and we knew a team like Corpus Christi Moody would really push us.”
It took a thrilling secondplace finish in the mile relay to secure the victory. Up 91-86 on Edinburg North going into the final event, Raymondville had to finish no less than one place behind North to win the meet. Raymondville did better than that, finishing the mile-relay in second place with a time of 3 minutes, 28.1 seconds. Raymondville was one spot ahead of North (3:28.6) and one spot behind first-place Moody (3:27.9).
Raymondville finished with 107 total points followed by North’s 98.
The third leg of the ‘Kats’ mile-relay team, Carlo Dominguez, was the boys competitor with the most points recorded on the night with 29, winning the long jump (22 feet, 7 inches) and the triple jump (46-8). Both marks are the Rio Grande Valley’s best.
Raymondville was also able to get 20 points from sprinter Dustin Alejo who won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, recording times of 10.90 and 22.30, respectively.
“We really like the big meets,” Alejo said. “We are not intimidated all by these teams. We like to show off what we got at Raymondville.”
On the girls side, Rio Grande City continues to be the story of the year. The Lady Rattlers once again dominated the competition, with their 163 points almost 73 points better than second-place Rockport-Fulton (90.3).
